Since the organization was left without a head, the directors had no choice but to dissolve it, and this was done in August, 1909. Book Another Book on the Theatre Classic Reprint

Download or read book Another Book on the Theatre Classic Reprint written by George Jean Nathan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Another Book on the Theatre The ambition to become a dramatic critic assails probably nine city boy-children out of ten in that epoch which lies between their ambition to become President of the United States (an ambition rejected not later than the age of eleven by all better-class youngsters) and the somewhat loftier subsequent ambition to marry Gaby Deslys. This ambition to grow up to be a professional remarker on the theatre is variously inculcated in youths. In the first place, they have at a very early age read the critical works of Mr. William Winter. A careful perusal of these standard critical works has convinced them that dramatic criticism is the pastime of taking luncheon with beautiful and prominent Shakespearean actresses. In the second place, they have read in the Sunday newspaper supplements many interviews by the dramatic critic of the paper in which that bored bird has recited the manner in which superb actresses have received him in their lacy peignoirs. Download or read book Plays for Children written by Alice I. Hazeltine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays for Children: An Annotated Index The principal feature of the index is the list of plays by title, with references to other versions of the same stories. NO attempt has been made to refer from the titles of all the fables and fairy tales nor to indicate the source of all the stories, but under the titles of books may be found references to scenes from them which have been dramatized. In general, narrative form and poetry are not included when material alone is preserved, as, for example, in volumes intended for oral as well as for dramatic reading. The list includes, however, narratives where suggestions or helps for dramatization are given, as well as dialogues intended not for action, but for reading. Selections from Shakespeare, and plays in foreign languages have been omitted. The annotation is intended to give a clue to the identification of the story more necessary, perhaps, with the simpler tales in the dramatic readers, since the play titles are frequently unlike those of the fairy tales and fables from which they are adapted. Additional help in finding certain stories may be found in Mary Huse Eastman's Index to fairy tales, myths and legends, which indicates variants of the same story. Often a quotation from the text suggests the character of the play. The number of characters is indicated, but it should be remembered that parts may often be doubled, and the number of boys and girls may vary accordingly. It has not seemed practicable to indicate the age of the children to whom each play is suited. The title of the book, the title of the play, the character of the annotation, the story iself, and sometimes the quotation given, often suggest this. Sometimes adults are needed. Some of the plays are best suited to older children. But as this is not a list for High School use, the Drama League List of plays for High School and College production should be consulted. Where the time required for production is given it has been found in the play itself, in the Drama League List of plays for children or in Miss Mackay's How to produce children's plays. Exercises which call into play the dramatic instinct are being used in many phases of school work, especially in the elementary grades. In these lower classes reading and language lessons are richly vitalized by the kind of activities which appeal to the child's natural impulse to imitate, to act a part.
