Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Own Book of American Geography This little book is believed to be essentially different, in several respects, from any one that has yet appeared. It is prepared for mere children, and is intended strictly as a First book of Geography. Among all those now in use, many of which are doubtless excellent, it is believed there are none, the style and arrangement of which, are well suited to beginners. The Author has attempted to furnish such a book as appears to be needed; one that maybe used for initiation, and that may properly be put into the hands of the pupil before any other. When he has been through this, he will be prepared for some more extensive system of Geography. This book may also be used to advantage, as an Introduction to the "First Book of History." It will be observed that the work contains only American Geography. It was thought that the Geography of our own Hemisphere, was not only the most important part of the study, but that it was the most convenient and proper, to be used for the purpose of introducing the pupil to a first acquaintance with the subject, generally. The greatest difficulty in teaching Geography, is at the beginning. The design of this book is, to remove this difficulty, and the study of our own Geography is used to secure this end. The pupil once introduced, will easily find books to aid his farther progress. If we might be permitted to name a work to follow this, we would recommend the "Malte Brun School Geography," as being arranged on a similar plan, and to which, we should regard the present volume a suitable introduction. With a view to enliven the subject as much as possible, the Author has introduced a variety of engravings, and has embraced the descriptions in a series of imaginary travels, which the pupil is supposed to perform in company with the Author. Experience has shown that this method excites the interest of the pupil, perhaps, beyond any other. The work contains several neatly engraved maps, and they are so arranged, that the questions face the maps to which they refer. The convenience of this plan, will be seen at once by Teachers. There is another topic of more importance than any we have yet noticed, and which it is proper to mention here. Several works have recently appeared on Geography, which are constructed wholly or in part, on the inductive plan. This is unquestionably the only true method of teaching Geography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Book of American History This book is a supplementary history intended for use in the fourth and fifth grades of our public schools, or for boys and girls from ten to fifteen years of age. It is also designed as a collateral reading book in connection with the study of one or more of the many elementary textbooks on American history. The authors have described in some detail a few of the more dramatic and picturesque events in the history of our country from the earliest times to the present day. The story form has been freely used because teachers of experience know that such material has the unmistakable mark of reality and that it is instinct with "the magic of life." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning photographer Matt Black traveled over 100,000 miles to chronicle the reality of today’s unseen and forgotten America. When Magnum photographer Matt Black began exploring his hometown in California’s rural Central Valley—dubbed “the other California,” where one-third of the population lives in poverty—he knew what his next project had to be. Black was inspired to create a vivid portrait of an unknown America, to photograph some of the poorest communities across the US. Traveling across forty-six states and Puerto Rico, Black visited designated “poverty areas,” places with a poverty rate above 20 percent, and found that poverty areas are so numerous that they’re never more than a two-hour’s drive apart, woven through the fabric of the country but cut off from “the land of opportunity.” American Geography is a visual record of this five-year, 100,000-mile road trip, which chronicles the vulnerable conditions faced by America’s poor. This compelling compilation of black-and-white photographs is accompanied by Black’s own travelogue—a collection of observations, overheard conversations in cafe´s and public transportation, diner menus, bus timetables, historical facts, and snippets from daily news reports. A future classic of photography, this monograph is supported by an international touring exhibition and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in witnessing the reality of an America that’s been excluded from the American Dream.

Book Our Own Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Own Country Classic Reprint written by Minna C. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Own Country This volume is designed to supplement regular instruo tion in the geography of the United States. It is not intended to take the place of the teacher, but to strengthen the impression which the teacher has made. All formal instruction in geography should be preceded by systematic and well-directed Observation of the phenom ena of the earth and of the heavens as these phenomena are manifested in the neighborhood in which the children live. The study of the home should be so thorough that the children will have all the elementary ideas which they need in forming adequate conceptions of those portions of the earth and the heavens which lie beyond the range of direct perception. During this process of immediate observation, all the ideas gained should be so connected with plans and maps that the children will be able, through the use of maps, to construct accurately, in their imaginations, the real world as it actually exists.
