This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of the Common Branches In order to supervise the child's learning most effectively, it is necessary to know what mental changes take place in the different forms of learning which he undertakes. Merely to know the result which is aimed at is not sufficient important as this is. One can learn in a short time to distinguish between good and poor writing, between an adequate and an inadequate understanding of history or geography, or between different degrees of proficiency in the pursuit of a science. A clerk can correct examination papers in arithmetic or spelling. These forms of discrimina tion make up the art of the examiner. When carried to a high degree of perfectidii in the development of standard tests of attainment, this art becomes more difficult, and it becomes possible to use the results in directing the pupil's efforts. But in the main the art of the teacher is the far more delicate one of following the changes which take place in the mind of the pupil, and of bringing to bear his influence upon them to produce the highest degree of improvement with the least expenditure of effort. In order to understand the process which is going on in the child's mind when he learns the various branches, it is necessary to have a conception of the typical learning processes which are involved in these branches. Book excerpt: As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Book The Mind and Its Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mind and Its Education Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind and Its Education This book is intended as an introduction to psychology for teachers, both in their private study and their Reading Circle classes, for students in secondary schools, normal schools or colleges, and for general readers. Its appearance is an immediate outgrowth of various courses of lectures on psychology and education given to teachers and elementary students in education. More remotely, it owes its origin to a suggestion received from Prof. John Dewey when the writer was a student in his classes. Said Professor Dewey: "The teacher is equally under the necessity of knowing each of the two factors in the educational process - culture and the child; that is, subject-matter and psychology - not the technicalities and controversial points of psychology, but its broad and fundamental truths, upon which practically all are agreed, and which, fortunately, are simple and easily understood." This statement furnishes the standpoint, in the following pages, for both subject-matter and method of treatment. First, the attempt has been made to present only fundamental truths, which, let us be thankful, are but little subject to controversy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of a Child My only apology for adding yet another to the many treatises on this subject is that I do not approach it from the point of view that I have indicated. My argument is that while we busy ourselves in the why and wherefore of a child's action, while we classify and dissect children in a fashion which no doubt has its fascination and interest for ourselves, we are losing sight of the most important side of childhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of Religion in the Mind of the Child: A Study of Child Life But is the postponement of all teaching on the subject, until the child is older, a satisfactory way out of the difficulty? And, even if it works in practice, is it the best way? Those of us who believe in the fundamental importance of religion, and who believe further that the spiritual impulse, the capacity for religion, which each child possesses in some degree to begin with, can be starved in early years for lack of nourishment, would prefer to ask whether all such teaching need be postponed whether it may not be our present lack of method which is responsible for the confusion rather than as Professor Sully seems to suggest - the nature of the subject taught. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child Mind: A Study in Elementary Ethology Then, the book is intended for those who confess to total ignorance of the juvenile mind, who say they are afraid of children, because in these days they are so grown-up, you know, and who think that a child only cares for people who play, excluding from its affections those who merely speak. And the object of such miniature philosophy is this that in con sideration of the fact that there must be in England so many others better fitted than the present author to propound views which in themselves are valuable, it is hoped that some one, whose mental and sentimental equipment is of the strongest, will enlarge upon the subject, draw attention to the starvation which is now possessing the souls of so many boys and girls, and, by this means, feed natures which, if warped and dwarfed, will turn into future atheists, pessimists, and dyspeptics of bitter tongue and sarcastic speech. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child: His Thinking, Feeling, and Doing In working over the mass of material which has accumulated on child-study, I have been most impressed by the fact that even now so few general laws can be formulated about child-nature. The material is still in a chaotic state, and seems destined to remain so for some time, because the reports from different authorities are so conflicting. In many cases the conflict is doubtless due to different conditions of observation; but in other cases it'is due to differences in children resulting from heredity, nationality, orfrom surroundings - homes, food, and education. Itherefore appreciate the fact that some of the observations given here will be seriously modified by later ones. I do not necessarily defend the observations which I cite; I only present the most reliable and leave them for confirmation or rebuttal.
