Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing attention has focused on the education of children in the child welfare system, particularly those in foster care, but ninety-two percent of children in the child welfare system stay with their parents and their educational needs receive little attention. Succeeding Together? is an institutional ethnography that analyses front-line accounts from mothers, teachers, and child welfare workers to explore the educational issues facing abused and neglected children outside of foster care. Kelly Gallagher-Mackay examines the complex policy framework and underlying assumptions that shape the practice of collective responsibility for this vulnerable group, shining a light on the implications of their status in-between private and public responsibility. Gallagher-Mackay breaks down collective responsibility into three areas: surveillance and the duty to report, child welfare’s poorly defined responsibility to provide educational supports, and the privatized nature of teachers’ professional responsibility for caring. The involvement of child welfare represents a public judgment that there should be strong, proactive, and coordinated intervention to ensure protection and well-being. Succeeding Together? reveals significant shortfalls in coordination and commitment to the well-being of society’s most vulnerable.

Book Youth in Conflict with the Law Fourth Edition

Download or read book Youth in Conflict with the Law Fourth Edition written by Denise Whitehead and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fourth edition, Youth in Conflict with the Law provides a thorough background on the social development of children and youth and the legal responses to young persons who are involved with crime in Canada. While maintaining the sharp focus and the discussion-provoking features that made earlier editions so popular, authors Denise Whitehead and Mark D. Hunter guide students through the important distinction between punishment and a restorative justice approach—a crucial understanding for those who are the first point of contact with youth. Highlighting the important role of police involvement from first contact to youth justice court, this new edition delves deeply into current issues relating to race and ethnicity, mental health, and the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the important intersection between youth criminal justice and child and family services. New to this edition are updated statistics on youth crime and references to current youth criminal legislation. Featuring informative sidebars, real case briefs, and “In the News” sections, and accompanied by an updated instructor’s guide, this accessibly written text is an excellent resource for students in police foundations programs and training courses.

Book Comparative intervention with minors in different countries

Download or read book Comparative intervention with minors in different countries written by Concepción‏ Nieto Morales and published by Dykinson. This book was released on with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present course dedicated to minors, the participants will show us, in a schematic and very clearly way, the legal approach concerning the treatment that the respective States give the child, both in the field of protection, as in the one of the criminal responsibility for the commission of a crime or misdemeanor. Under this view of comparative law, there is the opportunity to meet the criminal procedure applied to children in conflict with the law, the age group from which criminal responsibility is required, the specialization of all the professionals involved from judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police, etc., involved in the area of the minor concerning the adversarial principle or the procedural guarantees for juvenile offenders. Regarding the enforcement of judicial measures, the central axis is education and the socialization of teenagers. However, each country has its own uniqueness and, in custodial measures, the age and type of crime are important in some countries. The part concerning extrajudicial solutions is highly informative, especially the part related to the Institute of mediation, where the participation of the victim is essential. I hope that reading and participation arouse in you the enthusiasm for me experienced, and that the efforts of its participants will be compensated with the learning and sensitization in the treatment of the child... Book Child Delinquents

Download or read book Child Delinquents written by Rolf Loeber and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1980 and 1996 the number of arrests has increased considerably for offenders ages 12 and under. This increase is a cost to society in two ways: the cost of the crime and the cost of multiple agencies involved with these children. Several questions have developed due to this increase: How does the juvenile justice system deal with child delinquents? Is child delinquency a predictor of serious, violent, and chronic offending? How early can we predict, and what are early warning signs? In an effort to develop answers for these questions and many more, editors Rolf Loeber and David Farrington organized a study group on Very Young offenders comprising 39 experts on juvenile delinquency and child problem behavior. Over a two-year period of intense and collaborative work these individuals have produced the book Child Delinquents: Development, Intervention, and Service Needs. Presenting empirically derived insights, Child Delinquents is the definitive statement to date on the working knowledge of prevalence, development, risk and protective factors, and optimal intervention with preteen offenders. This book is an excellent source for a broad audience of researchers, scholars, psychiatry, and practitioners at the administrative level.

Book Canadian Social Policy

Download or read book Canadian Social Policy written by Anne Westhues and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social policy shapes the daily lives of every Canadian citizen and should reflect the beliefs of a majority of Canadians on just approaches to the promotion of health, safety, and well-being. Too often, those on the front lines—social workers, nurses, and teachers—observe that policies do not work well for the most vulnerable groups in society. In the first part of this new edition of Canadian Social Policy, Westhues and Wharf argue that service deliverers have discretion in how policies are implemented, and the exercise of this discretion is how citizens experience policy—whether or not it is fair and reasonable. They show the reader how social policy is made and they encourage active citizenship to produce policies that are more socially just. New material includes an examination of the reproduction of systemic racism through the implementation of human rights policy and a comparative analysis of the policy-making process in Quebec and English Canada. The second part of the book discusses policy issues currently under debate in Canada. Included are new chapters that explore parental leave policies and housing as a determinant of health. All chapters contain newly updated statistical data and research and policy analysis. A reworked section on the process of policy-making and the addition of questions for critical reflection enhance the suitability of the book as a core resource in social policy courses. The final chapter explores how front-line workers in the human services can advocate for change in organizational policies that will benefit the people supported.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shattering the Illusion is the first book to gather and comparatively analyze policies addressing child sexual abuse complaints in a selection of religious institutions in Canada. Although there is a substantial body of literature regarding Christianity and sexual abuse, very little of it focuses on religious institutions in Canada and their respective policies. In the foreword, Tracey J. Trothen summarizes the Cornwall Inquiry, out of which this book arose. She then examines the Roman Catholic Church, The United Church of Canada, the Anglican Church, the Mennonite Church, Islam, and the Canadian Unitarian Council/Unitarian Universalist Association, describing in detail the evolution and particular content of policies and procedures that address child sexual abuse complaints directed at paid and volunteer faith community representatives and/ or leaders. She identifies differences and common themes among the approaches taken by the institutions and provides a summary table for an accessible comparative overview. Child sexual abuse is not new, but the emergence of policies to address abuse complaints within religious institutions is. This book identifies significant and shared causal factors behind the emergence of policy and reviews their content carefully. This review will serve as a significant tool for furthering the development of such policies.

Book Responding to Youth Crime in Canada

Download or read book Responding to Youth Crime in Canada written by Carla Cesaroni and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-03-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Responding to Youth Crime in Canada, Anthony Doob and Carla Cesaroni describe how Canada has been responding to youth crime in the context of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which came into force on April 1, 2003. The authors describe what is known about Canadian youth crime, and the operation of the youth justice system in the context of the changes in the law that are taking place. The authors posit that the youth justice system has a relatively modest impact on youth crime. In order to respond intelligently to it and to evaluate the response of the state, two sets of information must be understood. First, society must try to understand what 'youth crime' looks like in Canada. Second, in order to understand - and evaluate - the changes that are being made in youth justice legislation in Canada, a clear understanding of the manner in which the youth justice system currently operates is necessary. Unlike those who look to the youth justice system to solve the problem of youth crime, the authors suggest that we should look to the youth justice system to respond appropriately to the realities of what constitutes youth crime and look elsewhere to address how one might affect the level of youth crime in our society.
