Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Guide to Greek Accentuation These notes are an attempt to steer a middle course between the diffusiveness on the one hand, and the meagreness on the other, which so far have characterised the teaching of Greek Accent nation. From my own experience I do not believe that the custom of giving a beginner a few of the principal rules and exceptions, and then allowing him to pick up his knowledge by practice, zle. At random, is ever a success; and on this account I have endeavoured to make my rules as exhaustive as possible, and also to give the chief exceptions in each case, as I believe that 'faith in a rule is severely shaken when important exceptions to it are daily encountered. At the same time I have omitted rare and poetical words that would hardly find a place in an ordinary piece of Greek Prose. Book Ancient Greek Accentuation

Download or read book Ancient Greek Accentuation written by Philomen Probert and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accent of many Greek words has long been considered arbitrary, but Philomen Probert points to some striking correlations between accentuation and a word's synchronic morphological transparency, and between accentuation and word frequency, that give clues to the prehistory of the accent system. Bringing together comparative evidence for the Indo-European accentuation of the relevant categories with recent insights into the effects that loss of transparency and word frequency have on language change, Probert uses the synchronically observable correlations to bridge the gap between the accentuation patterns reconstructable for Indo-European and those directly attested for Greek from the Hellenistic period onwards.
