Download or read book Pandilla Del Gallinero written by Robert W. Millner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes the Chicken Coup Gang interesting and fun is that it is based upon true stories that actually happened to the author Robert W. Millner and his two sisters Nancy and Ginny. These three people are portrayed in the book as Eric, the eldest, Mindy, three years younger, and Cindy, the baby of the family, a year younger than Nancy. The children have a mother who doesn't have to work and a father who is a band director as well as a professional accordionist. The family leaves Long Island every summer to spend the entire summer vacation at a family resort in the Catskill Mountains. The children believed the stories about old Rip Van Winkle bowling in the mountains with the Dutch sailors every time there was a thunder storm. Two more girls came to Pleasant View Lodge with their mother Mildred and father, a saxophone player and violinist named Peter. The children would often explore the lodge and found several fun places to play; the old barn full of fresh hay, the rec. room with ping pong tables and pinball machines and the old chicken coup at the edge of the woods. It was here they met and formed the Chicken Coup Gang. These five children were very creative. After all, what do you do all summer at a summer resort? This book is about those funny and sometimes scary adventures including the Masquerade Ball, the whimsical talent show, the lady in the closet, the moving tea cup, free money and much more. At the end of the book is a chapter entitled "Personal Growth". When the author was a boy and watched t.v., he especially enjoyed a story with a meaningful ending. The same holds true for this book. The Personal Growth page is designed to ask you roughly five thought questions. See what answers you would come up with. Compare them with the answers of your brother, sister or best friend. Also included is a page to help you with words you may not be familiar with. It's titled "Words and Their Meaning". What words don't you know? This is the first in a series of books about the exciting adventures of Eric, Mindy and Cindy.

Download or read book The Gang written by Frederic Milton Thrasher and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While gangs and gang culture have been around for countless centuries, The Gang is one of the first academic studies of the phenomenon. Originally published in 1927, Frederic Milton Thrasher’s magnum opus offers a profound and careful analysis of hundreds of gangs in Chicago in the early part of the twentieth century. With rich prose and an eye for detail, Thrasher looked specifically at the way in which urban geography shaped gangs, and posited the thesis that neighborhoods in flux were more likely to produce gangs. Moreover, he traced gang culture back to feudal and medieval power systems and linked tribal ethos in other societies to codes of honor and glory found in American gangs. Thrasher approaches his subject with empathy and insightfulness, and creates a multifaceted and textured portrait that still has much to offer to readers today. With handsome images that evoke the era, this unabridged edition of The Gang not only explores an important moment in the history of Chicago, but also is itself a landmark in the history of sociology and subcultural theory.

And how could the Cold War of so long ago have any connections with todays events in the Middle East? In a fast-paced and well-researched historical novel, author Jim Conkey draws a terrifying picture of how terrorism threatened world peace long before the twin towers fell. Book Billy the Kid From Houston Not Texas

Download or read book Billy the Kid From Houston Not Texas written by Bill Ramsey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-09-21 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade of the fifties may have been the last to allow children to be children. Childhood in the fifties was innocent, happy, and carefree. Author Bill Ramsey was a child who grew up in that decade. In Billy the Kid (From Houston-Not Texas) he recalls those times and the townspeople, teachers, and neighbors in Houston, Pennsylvania. Ramsey and his family lived in a modest home in this small town in western Pennsylvania, where the townspeople helped him to become a man. His adult values and philosophies were shaped by that experience. This biographical memoir recounts the simple existence of children in the fifties, with the pick-up ball games, bike riding, and spontaneous play that today's children have replaced with television, the Internet and video games. It was a time when families ate meals together and fast food restaurants did not exist. It was a time when everyone knew his neighbors. The vignettes offered in Billy the Kid honor the memory of those carefree days and the joys of childhood. Although we can't return to those years, we can return to a simpler way of life that can be sustained and enjoyed.

Book excerpt: Connor Allen was trapped in the basement of Adler department store. He had been there working, sweeping and waxing the floors of the four-story building. He worked there every Saturday night after the store had closed. It was a job that he had taken to earn money for college. His only company during that graveyard shift was an aged security guard. Neither were prepared for what happened that night. Four men broke into the store. They intended to rob it. They didn’t intend to leave any witnesses. Bill Collins, the store security guard, was murdered trying to prevent the robbery. A cat and mouse game ensued as Connor moved from one hiding place to another in the dark, cold basement of Adler. His only hope for escaping the killers was reaching the fourth floor of the department store. From there, he could escape to the roof and down the fire escape to the street below. But the only way to the fourth floor was up a hidden stairway. That stairway had not been used in years. It was sealed off after the fourth floor closed ten years before. A murder had taken place on that floor. The floor was never re-opened after the murder. But, since its closure, voices, laughter, and gunshots had been heard coming from that floor. It was rumored that ghosts lived there. But Connor had no choice. That was the only exit available to him. On the fourth floor, he discovered many secrets about the murders, about the Adler family, and about the history of that department store. He would discover that the strangers that were hunting him weren’t the only threats to his life. Through the insane mind of a stranger living on the fourth floor, he discovered the secrets of the murders and the reason that the strangers would never stop until he was dead. But did the robbery and murders actually occur? Or were they the imagination of a sick mind? The final chapter takes place in a psychiatric hospital, where nothing is exactly how it seems.
