This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honest to God, originally published in 1963, has been described as the most talked-about theological work of the twentieth century. Its publication work instigated a passionate debate about the nature of Christian belief and doctrine in the white heat of a secular revolution. It also epitomized the revolutionary spirit of a fresh and challenging way of looking at the world, which, throughout the 1960s, was to bring about the disintegration of established orthodoxies and social, political and theological norms. It articulated the anxieties of a generation who saw these traditional givens as no longer acceptable or necessarily credible. Reissued on the 50th anniversary of the original publication, Honest to God is not only a book that generated controversy and debate in its own time, but a piece of honest theology which continues to inspire many in teir search for credible Christianity in today's world.

Book Models for Divine Activity

Download or read book Models for Divine Activity written by Ian T. Ramsey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This last book by the Bishop of Durham is the text of the Zenos Lectures that he gave in Chicago in 1966. In them, Dr Ramsey applied his well-known approach of models and disclosure situations to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. The first lecture considers the origin and use of the model of wind, breath, air, from which the Spirit is named; subsequent lectures consider the models of "economy" and presence. In the discussion, a number of important issues are touched on: the personality of the Holy Spirit, the ubiquity of God, and the relationship of prayer to the presence of God. The final lecture goes on to counter criticisms that have been made of Dr Ramsey's theology. Are models and disclosures not a substitute for God? Is not this approach virtually atheistic, with perhaps not much "virtual" about it? Because Dr Ramsey's writings have appeared in a great many books and journals, it has also been thought fitting to include a comprehensive bibliography, and this book ends with a complete list of all his published works.

Book Dictionary of Twentieth Century British Philosophers

Download or read book Dictionary of Twentieth Century British Philosophers written by Stuart Brown and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 1246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a two-volume work with entries on individuals who made some contribution to philosophy in the period 1900 to 1960 or soon after. The entries deal with the whole philosophical work of an individual or, in the case of philosophers still living, their whole work to date. Typically the individuals included have been born by 1935 and by now have made their main contributions. Contributions to the subject typically take the form of books or journal articles, but influential teachers and people otherwise important in the world of philosophy may also be included. The dictionary includes amateurs as well as professional philosophers and, where appropriate, thinkers whose main discipline was outside philosophy. There are special problems about the term "British" in the twentieth century, partly because of human migration, partly because of decolonialization and the changing denotation of the term. The intention has been to include not only those who were British subjects at least for a significant part of their lives (even if they mostly lived outside what is now the U.K.) but also people who spent a significant part of their lives in Britain itself, irrespective of their nationality or country of origin. In the first category are included, for instance, a number of people who were born and educated in Britain but who subsequently taught in universities abroad. In the second category are included those who were born elsewhere but who came to Britain and contributed to its philosophical culture.

Book Liminal Reality and Transformational Power

Download or read book Liminal Reality and Transformational Power written by Timothy Carson and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liminal Reality and Transformational Power explores, draws together, and integrates the many facets of liminality, and informs our understanding of liminal phenomena in the world. Through anthropology, sociology, theology, neurology and psychology, Carson correlates exterior transitions with their corresponding intra-psychic movements and points toward useful methods that contribute to personal and social transformation. In this revised edition, Carson has recognised the resurgence of liminality, and addresses the social transitions that are prevalent today in communities around the world. He examines the identity of the 'liminal' person and highlights the role of ritual leaders and religious professionals as they guide people through liminal time and space. Carson's work greatly contributes to an expanded understanding of the complex dimensions of religious leadership and provides useful insight into our intra-psychic processes during the significant transitional stages in life.
