Book From High School to the Future

Download or read book From High School to the Future written by Melissa Roderick and published by Consortium on Chicago School Research. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 2010 address to the College Board, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan laid out a vision for high school that advances the Obama administration's goal of the U.S. once again leading the world in educational attainment. There is no grade in which the magnitude and complexity of this shift becomes clearer than in senior year. Historically, senior year has been a time of finishing up graduation requirements as most students entered the work force after high school. In this new economy, most students now hope to go to college and those who are not entering college face a rapidly eroding labor market for young adults with only a high school education. This changing educational landscape means that students' coursework and activities in senior year are becoming increasingly important. If the new purpose of high schools is to be a "launching pad rather than a last stop destination," what does that mean for senior year? The bottom line is that there is much work to do if cps is to shift the focus of twelfth grade from finishing graduation requirements to preparing for college and employment or training. A central theme of this report is that there is no single answer to the question, "What is a good senior year?" Students are coming into senior year with very different needs. In order to look at differences in needs across students, the authors group students by their college qualifications at the end of eleventh grade. Thus, throughout this report, the authors focus on identifying the set of issues that educators need to grapple with for students on different trajectories. Appended are: (1) Data Used in This Report; (2) Determining Who is a Senior and Who Persists in Four-Year Colleges; (3) Variables Used in the Analysis; (4) Latent Class Analysis; (5) Identifying College Access; and (6) Methodology. (Contains 33 figures, 16 tables, and 70 endnotes.).

Book Looking Forward to High School and College

Download or read book Looking Forward to High School and College written by Elaine Allensworth and published by Consortium on Chicago School Research. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grades and attendance-not test scores-are the middle grade factors most strongly connected with both high school and college success. In fact, grades and attendance matter more than test scores, race, poverty, or other background characteristics for later academic success. This report follows approximately 20,000 Chicago Public Schools students as they transition from elementary to high school. It is designed to help answer questions about which markers should be used to gauge whether students are ready to succeed in high school and beyond. It also considers the performance levels students need to reach in middle school to have a reasonable chance of succeeding in high school.

Book What Matters for Staying On Track and Graduating in Chicago Public Highs Schools

This book was released on 2007 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing recognition that a high school diploma is a minimum requirement for success in the workplace, nearly half of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students fail to graduate, and in some CPS high schools, more students drop out than graduate. Research on dropping out has shown that the decision to persist in or leave school is affected by multiple contextual factors interacting in a cumulative way over the life course of a student. Often overlooked in this discussion is one most directly related to graduation: student course performance. This report looks at student performance in freshman coursework, how it is related to eventual graduation and how personal and school factors contribute to success of failure in freshman-year courses. Data on course performance can be used to identify future dropouts and graduates with precision, and performance indicators are compared to discern how they might be used for nuanced targeting of students at risk of dropping out. Factors contributing to successful course performance demonstrate that what students do while in high school is more important that their background or preparation for high school; Significant findings include: (1) Course passing rates are found to be primarily determined by attendance; and (2) Students attend class more often when they have strong relationships with their teachers, and when they see school and their coursework as relevant and important for their future. This is the message that must be urged upon both students and parents. The document includes four appendixes: (A) Individual School Data; (B) Description of Survey Measures; (C) Correlations Involving Survey Measures; and (D) Summaries of Models. (Individual chapters contain figures, tables, and endnotes.).

Book Student and Teacher Safety in Chicago Public Schools

Download or read book Student and Teacher Safety in Chicago Public Schools written by Matthew P. Steinberg and published by . This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In schools across the country, students routinely encounter a range of safety issues--from overt acts of violence and bullying to subtle intimidation and disrespect. Though extreme incidents such as school shootings tend to attract the most attention, day-to-day incidents such as gossip, hallway fights, and yelling matches between teachers and students contribute to students' overall sense of safety and shape the learning climate in the school. Not surprisingly, schools serving students from high-crime, high-poverty areas find it particularly challenging to create safe, supportive learning environments. Chicago Public Schools (cps), the subject of this report, is no exception. In many cps schools, teachers, and students report feeling unsafe in hallways, classrooms, and the area just outside the school building. Yet, in many other Chicago schools--even some schools serving large populations of students from high-poverty, high-crime areas--students and teachers do feel safe. What distinguishes these schools? Two years ago, cps leadership suggested an innovative method of addressing safety concerns in schools--creating and implementing a "culture of calm" initiative predicated on developing positive and engaging relationships between adults and children. Though not an evaluation of culture of calm, this report provides initial evidence about the potential promise of such a strategy. The report examines the internal and external conditions that matter for students' and teachers' feelings of safety. It shows how the external conditions around the school, and in students' backgrounds and home communities, strongly define the level of safety in schools. It then examines the extent to which factors under the control of schools--their social and organizational structure, and particularly the relationships among adults and students--mediate those external influences. Appendices include: (1) Student and Teacher Survey Responses; (2) Survey Measures Used in This Report; (3) Methodological Details on Statistical Models; and (4) Models of Safety by Neighborhood and School Context. (Contains 13 tables, 17 figures and 55 endnotes.).

Book Organizing Schools for Improvement

Download or read book Organizing Schools for Improvement written by Anthony S. Bryk and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988, the Chicago public school system decentralized, granting parents and communities significant resources and authority to reform their schools in dramatic ways. To track the effects of this bold experiment, the authors of Organizing Schools for Improvement collected a wealth of data on elementary schools in Chicago. Over a seven-year period they identified one hundred elementary schools that had substantially improved—and one hundred that had not. What did the successful schools do to accelerate student learning? The authors of this illuminating book identify a comprehensive set of practices and conditions that were key factors for improvement, including school leadership, the professional capacity of the faculty and staff, and a student-centered learning climate. In addition, they analyze the impact of social dynamics, including crime, critically examining the inextricable link between schools and their communities. Putting their data onto a more human scale, they also chronicle the stories of two neighboring schools with very different trajectories. The lessons gleaned from this groundbreaking study will be invaluable for anyone involved with urban education.
