Malgaigne, in his classical work on fractures (page says, an important question to be solved is to know if our art possesses any means for softening callus, so as to cause it to yield more easily; and after referring to the means above enumerated, and others, he concludes that none of them are deserving of confidence. It is this want which I hope to supply by the introduction of a new method of treatment. In conclusion, permit me to add that I do not advise the resort to this method in every case. The age and good health of this patient, the superficial situation of the tibia (the only bone operated on), are all circumstances favorable to success; still, I am not without the hope that it will be found' applicable In a considerable variety of cases hitherto regarded as incurable, or in which more severe operations are regarded as necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 46: January to June, 1883 Next, we note that the urine is of very high color, so much so as sometimes to suggest its admixture with blood, and this is often the case. The urine is not transparent, but smoky and cloudy, containing debris of broken down tissues, epithelium, etc. The urinometer will Show the urine to be usually high in specific gravity, between 1020 and 1030, corresponding inversely with the quantity of urine secreted. The urine in tubal nephritis will always be found to contain albumen; this condition is never absent. It will be present in larger relative quantities in this than in any other kidney lesion, and so constantly true is this, that it becomes almost diagnostic of this lesion. It is a most important aid to the practitioner to be able readily ty estimate the presence and quantity of albumen in a specimen of urine, and without which cases do not receive the comparison day by day so essential to estimate the progress of the disease. The old method, with heat and nitric acid, takes some time to accomplish, and minor accidents are frequent, as breaking of tubes, or the boiling over of the urine and acid; and, moreover, if the amount of albumen is Small, and the acid be added in excess, the albumen will be re-dissolved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 42: January to July, 1881 A large part of the diseases coming under the care of the physician, are caused by errors in diet, drinks, clothing, ventila tion and other matters included under the term hygiene; and no one can attain the highest degree of success as a practitioner, who does not fully appreciate the importance of careful attention to the hygienic influences affecting his patients. The object of such attention is two-fold: namely, to remove or correct such erroneous habits and conditions as may be still acting as causes; and the substitution of such as will positively aid in the restoration of the patient. A comfortable tempera ture a sufficient supply of fresh, pure air cleanliness; a care ful adaptation of the quantity and quality of food and drink to the capacity of the digestive organs to receive and assimilate it; and a quiet, cheerful. Hopeful mental influence, are hygienic conditions of universal applicability in the management of the sick. I by no means approve of the modern doctrines of empeo tancy, which assumes that diseases must run their natural course, and that art can do little more than properly regulate the hygienic conditions of the patient, and leave the rest to that intangible something called nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 47: July to December, 1883 Last, but not least, among the Faculty of that day, was Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the great American surgeon, who that win ter, 1817-1818, delivered his last course of lectures on surgery. A pupil of John Hunter, he taught the doctrines of that great man. As I recall his course of lectures, it seems to me that he was one of the most impressive teachers that I have ever listened to. Dr. Physick was remarkable for great attention to details, and in his operations upon the cadaver, he carefully observed all the rules for operating upon the living body. He also recapitu lated the lecture of the preceding day before going on with his subject, by questioning the students who occupied the first two rows of seats in the amphitheater. I may refer to one incident which may illustrate his method and his carefulness. On one occasion he stumped the whole class. He had been lecturing on lithotomy the preceding day, and he put the question to the first student, What instruments should be provided for the opera tion? The answer appeared to have been correctly given, but he was not satisfied. The question was repeated to the next student, and finally to the whole class, with the same result. Dr. Physick then said it was a pin, gentlemen, a pin, that was needed to complete the list. This showed his precision, and im pressed upon us the necessity of taking care never to go to an operation without the minutest preparation. Dr. Physick was a man of medium. Height, with very regular features. His face at that time was pale, as if he suffered from delicate health. He was of very abstemious habits. I remem ber on one occasion, at a party given at his house, when the ser vant brought in a tray with wine, I was standing beside Dr. Chapman, when I placed my hand upon a decanter, as I sup posed, of wine; Dr. Chapman touched my elbow, and told me not to take that; I filled the glass from another bottle, and after ward asked the doctor why he had checked me. He said the first was simply colored water that Dr. Physick had provided for his own use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
