Book The Chicago Electrical Handbook

Download or read book The Chicago Electrical Handbook written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Electrical Handbook: Being a Guide for Visitors From Abroad Attending the International Electrical Congress, St. Louis, September, 1904 The purpose of this handbook is to furnish visiting delegates of the International Electrical Congress with a concise description of Chicago and its larger electrical interests. Inasmuch as many of the delegates are doubtless unfamiliar with Chicago's history, it may be permissible to offer a very brief resume of the city's origin and growth. The early French cartographers spelled Chicago in whatever way pleased their fancy - Chickagu, Chikagou, Chicago and Chicaqu. Historians of a later date have been even more decorative in their definitions of the word. Without attempting to enter into the subtleties of Indian terminology, it may be sufficient to quote a statement made by Dr. William Barry, first Secretary of the Chicago Historical Society, who says: "Whatever may have been the etymological meaning of the word 'Chicago,' in its practical use it probably denotes strong or great. The Indians applied this term to the Mississippi river, to thunder, or to the voice of the Great Manitou. Edward Hubbard, the genealogist, adopts a similar view and says that the word Chicago, in its applications, signifies strong, mighty, powerful." The aboriginal owners of Chicago were the Miamis. Louis Joliet and his fellow explorer, the Jesuit missionary, Jacques Marquette, were probably the first white men to land on the site of Chicago, when they explored the Illinois river in 1673. At any rate, the adventurous Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, has left us a very clear account of his trip down the Mississippi in 1681, via the "Chicago portage." This portage is noteworthy because it determined the location of Chicago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of Cartography Volume 6

Download or read book The History of Cartography Volume 6 written by Mark Monmonier and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 1941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, the History of Cartography Project has charted the course for scholarship on cartography, bringing together research from a variety of disciplines on the creation, dissemination, and use of maps. Volume 6, Cartography in the Twentieth Century, continues this tradition with a groundbreaking survey of the century just ended and a new full-color, encyclopedic format. The twentieth century is a pivotal period in map history. The transition from paper to digital formats led to previously unimaginable dynamic and interactive maps. Geographic information systems radically altered cartographic institutions and reduced the skill required to create maps. Satellite positioning and mobile communications revolutionized wayfinding. Mapping evolved as an important tool for coping with complexity, organizing knowledge, and influencing public opinion in all parts of the globe and at all levels of society. Volume 6 covers these changes comprehensively, while thoroughly demonstrating the far-reaching effects of maps on science, technology, and society—and vice versa. The lavishly produced volume includes more than five hundred articles accompanied by more than a thousand images. Hundreds of expert contributors provide both original research, often based on their own participation in the developments they describe, and interpretations of larger trends in cartography. Designed for use by both scholars and the general public, this definitive volume is a reference work of first resort for all who study and love maps.
