Book Modeling and Control of Ventilation

Download or read book Modeling and Control of Ventilation written by Stephen J.G. Semple and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of what have come to be known as the "Oxford" Conferences on modelling and the control of breathing can be traced back to a discussion between Dan Cunningham and Richard Hercynski at a conference dinner at the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1971. Each felt that they had benefited from the different perspectives from which the topic of ventilatory control was approached - predominantly physiological in the case of Dr Cunningham and predominantly mathematical in the case of Dr Hercynski. Their judgement at that time was that a conference on the control of breathing which allowed investigators with these different (but related) scientific perspectives to present and discuss their work, might prove fruitful. We would judge that this has amply been borne out, based upon the success of the series of conferences which resulted from that seminal dinner conversation. The first conference, entitled "Modelling of a Biological Control System: The Regulation of Breathing" was held in Oxford, UK, in 1978. Subsequent conferences were: "Modelling and the Control of Breathing" at Lake Arrowhead, California, in 1982; "Con cepts and Formulations in the Control of Breathing" in Solignac, France, in 1985; "Respi ratory Control: A Modeling Perspective" at Grand Lakes, Colorado, in 1988; and "Control of Breathing and Its Modelling Persepctive" at the Fuji Institute in Japan in 1991. The conferences, subsequent to the one in Oxford, have all resulted in well-received published proceedings.

Book Atlas of Operative Procedures in Surgical Oncology

Download or read book Atlas of Operative Procedures in Surgical Oncology written by Constantine P. Karakousis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the product of the author's long experience with melanomas and sarcomas and to a lesser but significant degree with upper gastrointestinal cancers, colorectal and breast cancers. As such, it offers a “hands-on” practical guide to approaching complex soft-tissue tumors and for performing more extensive tumor resections based on over 40 years of surgical experience. It provides important details about the positioning of patients, incision types, and exposure which can be of paramount importance in the resection of certain tumors. The book contains important general surgical principles for approaching tumors in a variety of locations but also offers the detail necessary for the safe and oncologically sound resection of these malignancies. Moreover, this operative atlas contains specific information for procedures which are not as commonly encountered in surgical training, but can be invaluable in the management of patients with locally aggressive tumors, such as hemipelvectomy and its variants, sacral resections, and forequarter amputation. Through the use of multiple detailed illustrations, Atlas of Operative Procedures in Surgical Oncology serves as a valuable resource to the general surgeon or surgical oncologist in the operative management of patients with cancer in the abdomen, retroperitoneum, pelvis or extremities.

Book Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Beyond the Left Ventricle

Download or read book Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Beyond the Left Ventricle written by M. Elizabeth Oates and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will serve as a comprehensive reference source and self-assessment guide for physicians and technologists who practice myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging. Readers will learn to identify a wide variety of findings apart from the left ventricle, including those in the chest, the abdomen, and the right heart. It is explained which findings are clinically relevant and related to the reason for the myocardial perfusion imaging examination and which are incidental, with or without important clinical ramifications. The coverage includes a wide variety of common and uncommon focal lesions (e.g., benign or malignant neoplasms) and organ/systemic diseases (e.g., emphysema, cirrhosis and its sequelae, cholecystitis, duodenogastric reflux/gastroparesis, end-stage renal disease) that may be detected with myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging. In addition, guidance is provided in the recognition of typical artifacts, which may appear either “hot” or “cold” on the raw (unprocessed) and processed SPECT images, and, thereby, in the avoidance of potential interpretative pitfalls.
