Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Linseed Oil The Chemistry of Oils is a study of peculiar interest. Not only does it afford a wide field for research by the pure chemist, but it also offers a tempting bait to the industrial or technical chemist. The subject has not received the attention it deserves from the student of chemistry, and.it is hoped that this little monograph will serve to stimulate interest in it. The thoughtful reader cannot peruse these pages without realising what a number of important problems still require elucidation, and teachers seeking suitable subjects for research for their more promising pupils should experience no difficulty in finding them here. It is of course impossible to deal with the subject as thoroughly as one could wish within the restricted limits of a small monograph, but explanatory notes and full references are given, which, it is hoped, will prove a useful feature of the work. In almost every case the original memoirs have been consulted, and in this connection the Author desires to express his sincere thanks to Mr F.W. C.Clifford, Librarian of the Chemical Society, for his unfailing courtesy and assistance. To the Editor, Dr Alex. C.Cumming, the Author is glad to have this opportunity of expressing sincere thanks for many useful criticisms and suggestions. Book The Chemistry and Technology of Paints Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chemistry and Technology of Paints Classic Reprint written by Maximilian Toch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Paints The manufacture of mixed paints is essentially American, having been accredited to' some enterprising New Englanders who observed that when a linseed oil paint was mixed with a solution of silicate of Soda (water glass) an emulsion was formed, and the paint SO made showed very little tendency to settle or harden in the package. Several lay claim to this discovery. The first mixed paint was marketed in.small packages for home consumption and appeared about 1865. The addition of silicate of soda is still practised by a few manufacturers, but the tendency is to eliminate 'it as far as possible and to minimize as much as possible the use of an alkaline watery solution to keep the paint in suspension. The general use of zinc oxid has had much to do With the progress of mixed paint, for it is well known that corroded White lead and linseed oil settle quickly in the package, while zinc oxid keeps the heavier lead longer in suspension. Where only heavy materials are used, manufacturers are inclined to add up to 4 per cent of water. Under another chapter on Water in the Composition of Mixed Paints, page 254, this subject will be fully discussed. Book Linseed Oil and Other Seed Oils

Download or read book Linseed Oil and Other Seed Oils written by William D. Ennis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Linseed Oil and Other Seed Oils: An Industrial Manual Few commodities enter less directly into consumption than linseed oil; yet fewer still find as wide a range of important applications. The seed-crushing industries are complex in their operative methods and commercial relations, rather than with respect to the machinery and equipment employed. These complications give opportunity for in structive study which is, in its outcome, suggestive to any manu facturer. The first eight chapters deal with standard forms of equipment, with which crushers are generally thoroughly familiar. It is believed, how ever, that the descriptions and illustrations given form a collated body of information more readily available for use in this form than other wise. They are unquestionably necessary to afford completeness. To the review. American practice is throughout treated as standard, but con stant reference is made to the widely diverging methods which prevail abroad, where the linseed-crushing industry is conducted on diametri cally different principles. Book Effect of Certain Pigments on Linseed Oil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Effect of Certain Pigments on Linseed Oil Classic Reprint written by E. W. Boughton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Certain Pigments on Linseed Oil In the present tests with films of oil alone, raw linseed oil showed a larger maximum gain in weight than boiled oil. This was the case in many previous tests in this laboratory and in Sabin's experiments. It is worthy of note that of all the oils used in the present tests, that which was mixed with China clay showed the largest maximum gain in weight. This pigment is the only one of those used which could not react chemically with the oil to form metallic soaps which could act as catalyzers. The pigments in the thick film tests showed approximately the same relationships as accelerators of oxidation that they did in the thin film tests. As would be expected, the gains in weight in the former tests were slower and the maximum gains in weight less.
