Book The Chemistry of Dyestuffs a Manual for Students of Chemistry and Dyeing Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Dyestuffs a Manual for Students of Chemistry and Dyeing The recent opportunity offered to the dyestuff industry in this country may be expected to lead to a greater interest in the chemistry of dyestuffs and a greater demand for chemists possessing special knowledge of colouring matters. To the dyer, a scientific knowledge of dyestuffs is always very useful, and to the dyer's chemist it is indispensable. It is necessary, however, that a thorough and systematic study of pure chemistry should precede any attempt to master a branch of applied chemistry, and we have presumed some such preparation by the student for whom this book is written. Although not specially intended to cover the syllabus for the City and Guilds of London Institute's examinations it provides the requisite knowledge in compact form. The scheme of treatment adopted being on elementary text-book lines, we have made no attempt to give references to original papers and patents. This would have involved considerable extra cost, and moreover such references are usually neglected by students in a first study of the subject, in our opinion wisely so. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry of Dye-Stuffs Originally designed to form a section of a text book ou the Technology of the d104ile Fibres, the present work was afterwards modified into a separate volume, chiefly in order to render it more accessible to chemists interested in the chemistry of dye-stuffs rather than in the dyeing and cloth printing industries. This change led to a more exhaustive treatment of the dye-stuffs and the omission of all particulars relating to them practical application, the latter being' relegated to the companion volume dealing also with the improvement of the fibres by bleaching, etc. Only in the sections treating of natural dye-stuffs and mineral colours has more attention been paid to the technical side, because the pre sent volume is primarily designed for the dyer's chemist. The aim in view was to provide a textbook presenting to the student in as lucid and condensed a form as possible the extremely wide domain of the modern chemistry of dye-stuffs. Download or read book The Fundamental Processes of Dye Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Dr. Hans Eduard Fierz-David and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Processes of Dye Chemistry In preparing an English edition of Prof. Fierz-David's well-known work on the practical side of dye chemistry, advantage has been taken of the opportunity to correct one or two slight errors that had crept into the original Swiss edition, and to make an alteration to Plate XV. For the rest, the book remains practically unaltered. In most cases the original weights and prices have been retained (in francs per kilo.), instead of trying to convert them into shillings per pound. It was felt that, as the figures referred usually to prewar conditions in Switzerland, and having regard to the present unsettled state of the exchanges and of production costs, no good purpose would be served by attempting to give the English equivalents which, in any case, would in all probability only be misleading. I wish to acknowledge, with much gratitude, the assistance rendered by my wife during the translation; and to Mr. C. Hollins my best thanks are due for his kindness in giving much valuable help in revising the manuscript and the proofs. Download or read book The Chemistry of Dyeing Classic Reprint written by John Kerfoot Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Dyeing BY the term Dyeing we mean the colouring of various materials, especially textile fabrics, in such a manner that the colour is not readily removed by washing or rubbing the article; moreover, the colour must be distributed right through the whole material, and not lie simply on the surface as with a painted article. The art of dyeing dates from prehistoric times and is of Eastern origin. Pliny gives a Short account of the methods employed in Egypt in the first century, but in even earlier times dyeing operations were carried on in India, China, and Persia. From Egypt knowledge of the art travelled in a westward direction, but it was not until towards the end of the fifteenth century that the Dyers' Company was incorporated in London. Previous to the middle of the last century, all the materials used as colouring agents were of natural origin, being chiefly obtained from various portions of trees and plants. Probably in the early stages of the development of dyeing, the colours produced were of a fugitive character and little better than stains. Download or read book A Manual of the Art of Dyeing Classic Reprint written by James Napier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Art of Dyeing It must be admitted, however, that notwithstanding all untoward circumstances, the degree of advancement which the art has attained is truly astonishing. A Single practical hint is sometimes sufficient to cause a complete revolution in some branch of the trade, so that were the principles of chemistry in their application to dyeing but once generally understood by those practically employed at the trade, we can hardly conceive what changes and improvements might not be effected. Another Circumstance calling for a few remarks is the fluctuating state of the trade, which, even in its best condition, throws not less than a fourth part of the workmen idle during the winter months. But while we admit the hardship of such a state of things in its fullest extent, we do not believe that this time should be allowed to glide by in absolute listlessness. It is still a portion Of the allotted span of life, and ought to be turned to all the advantage which circumstances will admit; and if it can be made subservient to future advantage, either by advancing the personal interests or in augmenting the mental enjoy ment of the individual, it is surely culpable to allow it to run to waste. We sincerely believe that it may be turned to account in both ways, and we promise, with some confidence, that the following Treatise will suggest the means of deriving remuneration even from idle hours. Lord Bacon's maxim, that Knowledge is power, has. Been reiterated till it may be thought to have lost its virtue; but it is still as true as ever, and we are confident that it cannot be more aptly applied than to the case of the practical dyer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Physics of Dyeing: Being an Account of the Relations Between Fibres and Dyes, the Formation of Lakes, and the General Reactions of Colloids, and Their Solution State IN the present volume an attempt is made to collect and classify the work which has been brought for ward to explain the action of dyeing, mordanting and lake formation. The general text-books on dyeing devote little space to this particular side of the question. They deal with the operations of the dye - house, rather than with the principles which seem to govern the actual practice of this branch of industry.
