Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cellulose: An Outline of the Chemistry of the Structural Elements of Plants, With Reference to Their, Natural History and Industrial Uses In accordance with this general and, at the same time, limited plan of the original, we have produced volumes Of 'researches' intended as supplements, in which the growth of the subject-matter is recorded in the form of abstracts Of original memoirs. -to these we have added critical notes intended as adumbrations of extensions of general theory, towards which all workers may be presumed to be striving, whether of set purpose or less consciously. Book Lectures on Cellulose Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Cellulose Classic Reprint written by C. Cross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Cellulose As a general criticism, therefore, the subject of colloidal matter is presented to the student rather as the play of Hamlet with the part of the prince left out. I take it, it is not the function of a lecturer to argue, and I must be allowed to commend the above statement as a subject for an examination essay or a students' debate. We have now to turn our attention to the central subject of our exposition: cellulose as a chemical individual, that is, in relation to systematic chemistry; and as a necessary preface to the question of a Normal Cellulose. The necessity of a definition will be at once evident from the fact that our chemical filter papers are usually supposed to represent a normal cellulose, and are, in fact, frequently taken as a starting point of scientific investigation of cellulose: whereas a very slight knowledge of the technology of paper making would suggest, a priori, the improbability of any of its products reaching this standard; and a chemical examination would soon dispose of any such claim. Book The Cellulose Water Interaction in Rag and Wood Pulps Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cellulose Water Interaction in Rag and Wood Pulps Classic Reprint written by E. L. Graminski and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cellulose-Water Interaction in Rag and Wood Pulps It has been theorized that during beating, lateral bonds between neighboring lamellae in the cell wall are broken allowing water to enter, enabling the lamellae to slide past one another and results in increased fiber flexibility (l). Evidence that some such process occurs is considered to be substantiated by the fact that during beating, pulp fibers become more flexible, collapse more easily, and disintegrate into sheet-like films or debris. Unfortunately, details of the process are lacking. There is great difficulty in examining the interior of the cellulose-water gel in the presence of water and in the ability to follow the structural changes during mechanical treatment. Book Wood Chemistry and Wood Biotechnology

Download or read book Wood Chemistry and Wood Biotechnology written by Monica Ek and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four volume set covers the entire spectrum of pulp and paper chemistry and technology from starting material to processes and products including market demands. This work is essential for all students of wood science and a useful reference for those working in the pulp and paper industry or on the chemistry of renewable resources. Volume 1 provides a survey of the biological and chemical structure of wood as well as an introduction to the chemical reactions used during pulp production processes. The work presents the different raw materials used for pulp production, the macroscopic and morphological construction of wood and related characterization methods, the chemical structure and arrangement of the wood polymers and extractives, biosynthesis of wood polymers, carbohydrate and lignin analysis, reactions of wood polymers in mechanical and chemical pulping and bleaching processes, biotechnical processes of relevance for the pulp and paper industry, different types of microorganisms and their modes of interaction with wood, the impact of chemical and microbiological processes on the hierarchical structure of wood and pulp.
