Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemist, Vol. 1: Or, Reporter of Chemical Discoveries and Improvements, and Protector of the Rights of the Chemist and Chemical ManufacturerThe want of a journal expressly devoted to chemistry, chemical manufactures and pharmacy, has long been felt; there is not one which can be considered as at all adapted for the chemical reader. There are, it is true, some few miscellaneous works, containing articles in various sciences and arts, and one or two others, composed of dull and heavy subjects of abstruse calculation, written expressly for those journals, and which seem as if they were intended to gratify the inclination of their authors for displaying their profundity, and to limit the number of their readers. These works form no record of chemical science, which should consist of all that occurs within the period of publication. It was to supply this deficiency that the chemist has been established, and every pains has been taken to keep it in the closest conformity with its object.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemist, Vol. 3: Or Reporter of Chemical Discoveries and Improvements, and Protector of the Rights of the Chemist and Chemical Manufacturer Three years' experience has indeed proved to us the value of an adherence to these principles, and its existence for that time has served to evince the high standing which the work has reached, and to satisfy all experienced in science, that it now rests secure in a character earned, confirmed and established, and is. Not necessitated to hope or seek for one. Any protestations or assurances for the future, are therefore scarcely necessary. We shall continue our labors as heretofore, with the strictest attention and increased vigor, to obtain the best matter, and by original communications, to add much to the amount of scientific knowledge, on all the subjects of this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemist, Vol. 1: Or, Reporter of Chemical Discoveries and Improvements, and Protector of the Rights of the Chemist and Chemical Manufacturer We have now completed the first volume of Tim Chemist, and terminated our labors for the year. We shall take a brief survey of the progress which the work has made, and of the advancement of the several branches of science, of which it is the record. That it has shared the usual fate of all works of the kind - that it has roused the envy of rival journals - and that it has been the subject of futile attempts to injure it, mid retard its acquirement of public estimation-is no more than might be expected. The Chemist, however, has had more than these to struggle with and to defeat: worthlessness, knavery, pitiable ignorance, and deception in parties who should have assisted us in our undertaking, but who took upon themselves that which they have left us to perform; together with the feeble efforts of contemporary malignity. Such means as have been adopted for the purpose of crushing our work, had they conic from ordinary sources, would have excited no wonder; but when it is stated that the engine of our attempted destruction was a Magazine of Philosophy - it may cause some surprise. In the first of these cases, we had an easy alternative, that of adding, to the labor and responsibility of editing, the whole expenses of the journal from the commencement to the present time, which we cheerfully undertook, from the firmest conviction of the ultimate success of our labors; and with every hope of rendering it, from time to time, still more deserving of public favor. In the latter case added to our most ineffable contempt, so far from succumbing, as doubtless it was hoped we should have done, to the unworthy stratagems of our opponents, we were only the more resolved to exert all our endeavours to render every number of the work still more perfect. Our triumph has been most complete; and The Chemist has now arrived at a sale, far exceeding our most sanguine anticipations; and we have received, we hope not undeservedly, the most unqualified approbation of men of science, and the more enlightened journals, which is far from being the ordinary lot of works of this nature; and it has established itself - "Per varios casus, per tot discrimina rerum." The want of a journal expressly devoted to Chemistry, Chemical Manufactures and Pharmacy, has long been felt; there is not one which can be considered as at all adapted for the chemical reader. There arc, it is true, some few miscellaneous works, containing articles in various sciences and arts, and one or two others, composed of dull and heavy subjects of abstruse calculation, written expressly for those journals, and which seem as if they were intended to gratify the inclination of their authors for displaying their profundity, and to limit the number of their readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemist, 1841, Vol. 2: Or Reporter of Chemical Discoveries and Improvements, and Protector of the Rights of the Chemist and Chemical Manufacturer WE have now fulfilled our engagements with the public for theypast year and a year in the science of Chemistry at the present time is an epoch, in comparison with the like period previous to the discoveries of black, cavendish, priestley, lavoisier, davy, watt. None who are acquainted with the works of those illustrious men can fail to trace to their labours that total revolution, from vague hypothesis 'and chimerica'l conjecture, to sound theory and accmately defined laws which new supply their place in that science, the most extended in its range of objects, and the most important in its application to the arts Of man. Nothing surely can be wanting to shew the value of their services to mankind but the mere record of their researches in Light, Heat, and electro-chemistry the discoveries of Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen as simple bodies, as the elements of water and the atmosphere, and as affording satisfactory explanations of the phenomena of respiration and combustion; of the composition of the Alkalies and Earths, and the development of the character Of Chlorine; the researches on Nitrous Oxide, and the invention and perfection Of the safety lamp by the transcendent power Of that chief Of Chemists who has left behind him' so many proofs to give the world assurance of a man the construction and varied application of the steam engine by the immortal watt, needs from us no comment - it is sufficient to conclude in the words of black, that it is the noblest gift Of philoso phy to the arts. Since the time Of these men, whose works are their best monument, what rapid progress has it not made; nay, indeed, we may add, what daily progress is it not making! Let us only refer to the' beautiful applications Of the Daguerréotype to the fine arts, by which in a few minutes correct likenesses can be taken with the perfection Of nature, instead Of the mawkish flatteries and crudities Of art. Not less valuable, though perhaps less astounding, is the process Of Electrotype, by one application Of which is superseded one of the most destructive and dangerous manufacturing Operations Of any employed in the arts. The use Of mercury in the processes Of gilding and silvering is for ever exploded by the simple aid of solution and electric action.
