Book Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Metals

Download or read book Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Metals written by R. Elliott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rare earths have a unique place among the elements. Although very much alike chemically and in most phy~ical properties they each have very different and striking magnetic properties. The reason, of course, lies in their 4f electrons which determine the magnetic properties but have little effect on other chemical and physical behaviour. Although they are not rare, some indeed are among the more common heavy elements in the earth's crust, the difficulty of separation has meant that their intricate magnetic properties have only recently been unravelled. Now, however, the general pattern of their magnetism is well charted and the underlying theory is well understood. Both are thoroughly summarised in this book. It provides an excellent example of the kind of extensive synthesis which is possible with modem solid state physics. it represents only a high plateau in the ascent to complete understanding. But It will become clear to the reader that while the overall position is satisfactory there are many details still to be elucidated experimentally and much to be done theoretically before all the underlying forces are identified and estimated from a priori calculations. It is hoped that the book will provide a useful stimulus in this direction. It should also be of use to those who are interested in related disciplines, for example the rare earth compounds, or the transition metals. In addition rare earths promise to be important technologically as alloy constituents.

Book Rare Earth Magnetism

Download or read book Rare Earth Magnetism written by Jens Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1991-06-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a unified and coherent account of an important, focused area of rare-earth magnetism -- magnetic structures and excitations -- which both reflects the nature of the fundamental magnetic interactions and determines many of the characteristic properties of metals. The authors concentrate on the essential principles and their applications to typical examples, generally restricting the discussion to the pure elements and considering alloys and compounds only when they are instructive in illuminating particular topics. Both authors have been involved for some time in the effort that has been made in Denmark to study, both theoretically and experimentally, the magnetic structures and especially the excitations in the rare earths. This account of the subject represents the result of their experience, and it has been written in the hope that it will be useful not only to those who have a special interest in rare-earth magnetism, but also to a wider audience of physicists and condensed matter scientists interested in the techniques and achievements of modern research in magnetism.

This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare-earth intermetallics, also known as lanthanide elements, play an important role in the study of magnetic materials and the development of semi- and super-conducting materials. This handbook provides an up-to-date compilation of crystallographic, physical, and magnetic data on rare-earth intermetallic compounds. Over 20 different structure types are described in detail with an emphasis on how crystal structure can affect magnetic properties. Theoretical models for magnetic interactions are described as well as the impact of crystal electric fields on transport properties, magneto crystalline anistropy and hyperfine interactions. This book provides materials scientists, engineers and physicists with all the critical information needed to use rare-earth intermetallics effectively in the development of new materials.

Book Compounds Between Rare Earth Elements and 3d 4d or 5d Elements Verbindungen von Seltenen Erden mit 3d 4d und 5d Elementen

Download or read book Compounds Between Rare Earth Elements and 3d 4d or 5d Elements Verbindungen von Seltenen Erden mit 3d 4d und 5d Elementen written by E. Burzo and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-09-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of Group III (Crystal and Solid State Physics) deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds. The amount of information available in this field is so substantial that several subvolumes are needed to cover it all. Subvolumes III/19a through III/19f treat the intrinsic magnetic properties, i.e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. So far, subvolumes III/19a, III/19b, III/19c and III/19e2 have appeared; III/19e1 is due in the near future. Subvolume III/19d is concerned with the magnetic data of metallic compounds of rare elements with the 3d, 4d and 5d transition elements. The present part III/19d2 is the first to be published; part III/19d1 will follow shortly. Data on the properties that depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films, amorphous alloys or the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, are being compiled in the last subvolumes of III/19: III/19g, III/19h and III/19i, of which III/19g has already appeared.

Book Novel Magnetic Behavior in Heavy Rare Earth Superlattices

Download or read book Novel Magnetic Behavior in Heavy Rare Earth Superlattices written by Tien Fang Tsui and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural and magnetic properties of heavy rare earth films and superlattices synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy are investigated. Epitaxial films of rare earth metals, and superlattices of rare earths with Y interlayers, are grown along different hcp orientations using novel techniques developed specifically for this thesis research. Interesting growth patterns and surface reconstructions are observed, particularly on the a and b faces of the hcp material. Magnetic behavior is explored by neutron diffraction and SQUID magnetometry experiments. The spatial form of the exchange interaction is explored by probing the dependence of magnetic coherence on crystal growth orientation. The results reveal that Dy/Y and Gd/Y superlattices grown along the a and b axis exhibit weak magnetic coupling between successive magnetic layers, even for nonmagnetic spacers as thin as $sim$20 A. Previous studies of the c-axis materials established that long range magnetic order occurs even through Y spacer layers as thick as $sim$120 A. This measured anisotropy between behavior along the c-axis and perpendicular to it, is over a factor ten in both the coupling strength and the range. The strongly anisotropic coupling behavior is shown to have its origin in nearly 2-dimensional nesting features of the rare earth Fermi surfaces. Nesting along the c-axis gives rise to long range exchange interactions along the c-axis, and the lack of nesting perpendicular to the c-axis leaves a rapid exponential decay of the exchange with spin separation. Magnetic phases of epitaxial Dy films are examined as a function of epitaxial strain, growth orientation, temperature and field. The analysis of the observed anisotropic magnetoelastic behavior reveals the detailed energy balance in the Dy system. The observed spin configurations in thin Gd films show that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of bulk Gd is substantially modified in the films. This in turn gives insight into the origin of the unusual spin reorientation transition in Gd. Magnetic order in buried monolayers of Gd-Y alloys is studied in order to explore the effects of both the reduced physical dimensions and the modified effective exchange interaction on phase transitions. No long range order occurs in the monolayer system even for nearly full Gd monolayer coverage. A spin-glass transition is observed instead. The zero field susceptibility exhibits a divergence at low temperatures. The analysis of the magnetic states reveals unusual scaling behavior and a dimensionality cross-over in the monolayer system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the author began working on phosphors based on rare-earth elements, he lacked an introductory textbook that explained the fundamental chemistry, basic optical properties, and magnetic characteristics of lanthanide elements. This book provides a concise overview of the rare-earth elements and is divided into two parts. In the first part, the reader receives an overview of solid-state chemistry and fundamental physical properties of these elements. Key topics of the first part include the separation chemistry of lanthanides, their chemical behaviour and physical properties. Then relevant compound classes are illustrated, crystal structures are systematically explained. The second part focuses on the optical and magnetic properties on relevant examples, also discussing many applications. Students and researchers new to the topic of "Rare-Earth Elements" receive a comprehensive introduction to understand basic optical and magnetic properties and incentives for deeper studies.
