Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaucer Story Book T has been somewhat the fashion of late to declare I that the difficulty of reading Chaucer has been greatly overestimated. Probably it has - for some peo ple. Chaucer, compared with Beowulf, for instance, is play. For one who knows a little French, a little Ger man, and a little Latin, who has a shadowy recollection of Grimm's Law, a good memory for obsolete and half obsolete expressions, and a natural talent for discovering the gist of a word, no matter how it is spelled, it is a simple matter to read Chaucer. Doubtless, it would be better if every one would read everything in the exact form which it took in its author's mind, the Canterbury Tales included; but, though most people claim to be able to appreciate humor, pathos, charac ter-drawing, mischievous satire, and love of nature, and though all these qualifies are found' abundantly in the poetry of Chaucer, never met man. Book excerpt: The most complete of all remaining surviving fragments sections of The Canterbury Tales, the First Fragment contains some of Chaucer's most widely enjoyed work. In The General Prologue, Chaucer introduces his pilgrims through a set of speaking portraits, drawn with a clarity that makes no attempt to conceal their peculiarities. The four tales that follow - those of the Knight, Miller, Reeve and Cook - reveal a wide variety of human preoccupations: whether chivalrous, romantic or simply sexual. Brilliantly bawdy and subtly complex, each of these tales is alive with Chaucer's skills as a poet, storyteller and creator of comedy.

Book excerpt: A fresh, modern prose retelling captures the vigorous and bawdy spirit of Chaucer’s classic Renowned critic, historian, and biographer Peter Ackroyd takes on what is arguably the greatest poem in the English language and presents the work in a prose vernacular that makes it accessible to modern readers while preserving the spirit of the original. A mirror for medieval society, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales concerns a motley group of pilgrims who meet in a London inn on their way to Canterbury and agree to take part in a storytelling competition. Ranging from comedy to tragedy, pious sermon to ribald farce, heroic adventure to passionate romance, the tales serve not only as a summation of the sensibility of the Middle Ages but as a representation of the drama of the human condition. Ackroyd’s contemporary prose emphasizes the humanity of these characters—as well as explicitly rendering the naughty good humor of the writer whose comedy influenced Fielding and Dickens—yet still masterfully evokes the euphonies and harmonies of Chaucer’s verse. This retelling is sure to delight modern readers and bring a new appreciation to those already familiar with the classic tales.

Book Selections From Chaucer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From Chaucer Classic Reprint written by Geoffrey Chaucer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Chaucer In preparing this volume the editor has endeavored to reduce to a minimum the apparatus necessary to accompany the reading of selections from Chaucer. The introduction is by no means so long as it might have been made; the notes are not so complete as would be expected if the book were to be used by specialists in Middle English. The editor suggests that the first three sections of the introduction be read, rapidly at the very outset; after some' sequamtadobfl has fbeen gained with the text, these sections may be read again more carefully. The sections pn.' Prg nunciation, on Inflection, and on Versification should of course be mastered early; the best my. Seems to be to require them to be studied in connection with very short passages from the text, so that each principle may be immediately applied. Since the vocabulary of the Prologue is distinctly difficult some teachers may prefer to begin the reading with the comparatively easy Nun's Priest's Tale. In this way the language Will seem less remote from the language of Shakspere, and atten tion may be centered upon the difficulties of pronunci ation and metre.
