Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chase of De Wet: And Other Later Phases of the Boer War as Seen by an American Correspondent The good ship scot, still, I believe, holder of the record between The Needles and Green Point, drew alongside her dock at Cape Town, on her fourth outward voyage from England, on the morning of Wednesday, April 24, 1900, seventeen days out from Southampton. No one who loves the sea can re gret an hour spent in those pleasant waters that lie between Cape Finisterre and the Cape of Good Hope. \ve had touched at Madeira, that ill-kept, picturesque garden Spot, sunning itself so smilingly in the lovely summer sea, and had Spent a few boisterous hours bumping over the greasy cobble-stones of Funchal in palanquins drawn by diminutive bullocks and rest ing on primitive runners, in deference to the local Portuguese prejudice against wheels. Putting out to sea again, with course shaped due south to round Cape de Verde, we had gazed in awe next day at the noble peak of Teneriffe, rising sheer out of the sea to its majestic height of feet. We caught our first glimpse of it in the dawn, and not until late in the afternoon did it flash its last greeting to us from its gleaming pinnacle. And as the ship cleaved her placid way through the tropics and across the line. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Rocky Road to the Great War

Download or read book The Rocky Road to the Great War written by Nicholas Murray and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Murray's The Rocky Road to the Great War examines the evolution of field fortification theory and practice between 1877 and 1914. During this period field fortifications became increasingly important, and their construction evolved from primarily above to below ground. The reasons for these changes are crucial to explaining the landscape of World War I, yet they have remained largely unstudied. The transformation in field fortifications reflected not only the ongoing technological advances but also the changing priorities in the reasons for constructing them, such as preventing desertion, protecting troops, multiplying forces, reinforcing tactical points, providing a secure base, and dominating an area. Field fortification theory, however, did not evolve solely in response to improving firepower or technology. Rather, a combination of those factors and societal ones-for example, the rise of large conscript armies and the increasing participation of citizens rather than subjects-led directly to technical alterations in the actual construction of the fieldworks. These technical developments arose from the second wave of the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century that provided new technologies that increased the firepower of artillery, which in turn drove the transition from above- to belowground field fortification. Based largely on primary sourcesùincluding French, British, Austrian, and American military attache reports-Murray's enlightening study is unique in defining, fully examining, and contextualizing the theories and construction of field fortifications before World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.
