Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chartulary or Register of the Abbey of St. Werburgh, Chester, Vol. 2: Edited With Introduction and Notes The present volume completes the publication of the Chester Chartulary, the first part of which appeared three years ago. It includes more than five hundred documents (a few being specially numbered as not in the abbey register), and of these sixty-four are full texts with witnesses, gathered from various sources to replace the usually meagre abstracts of the register. The general proportion is slightly less than in Part I., but while that included no more than four taken from surviving originals, and one of these of contested authenticity, thirty-two, exactly half the total number of complete texts in the present part, are copied from originals. Of the thirty-two, twenty-four form part of the Mainwaring collection of charters which Sir Harry Mainwaring, when giving up Over Peover recently, placed in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, on loan for an indefinite period, for the use of students.1 Ormerod and his editor Helsby do not seem to have had access to these deeds, and did not make full use of the transcripts of many of them which the antiquaries of the seven teenth century have left. Until the middle of the eighteenth century they belonged to the Kermincham branch of the Main warings, which had acquired the abbey manor of Barnshaw-cum Goostrey and with it the deeds relating to the various estates included in the manor. On the sale of the manor to the main line between 1752 and 1757 2 the charters were transferred to Peover. There is reason to believe, however, that some deeds which originally formed part of the collection had become. This book considers Edmund’s life, his use of his wealth to lend to the king and others and to be a major benefactor of religious houses. His piety saw him found two new religious houses, rebuild another and bring the Holy Blood relic from Germany to Hailes abbey. His record as Regent of England for three years is assessed. The wide spread of his lands, which included 13castles and more than 800 places in 27 counties, and his tenants are set out as is his place in the local community. The basis of his wealth and its sources, including money from his lands but also from tin mining and marine dues in Cornwall, is explored and his knightly affinity and his close associates and officials are considered. On a personal level, the book examines his unsuccessful, childless marriage with the sister of the Earl of Gloucester. Edmund was a key figure throughout Edward I's rein and the late-thirteenth century. In this insightful account, the man behind England's 'greatest king' is at long last brought to the fore.

The volume includes new interpretations of well-known sources and features such as the Chester Whistun Plays and the city’s Rows and walls, but also includes discussions of less-studied material such as Lucian’s In Praise of Chester – one of the earliest examples of urban encomium from England and an important text for understanding the medieval city – and the wealth of medieval Welsh poetry relating to Chester. Certain key themes emerge across the essays within this volume, including relations between the Welsh and English, formulations of centre and periphery, nation and region, different kinds of ‘mapping’ and the visual and textual representation of place, borders and boundaries, uses of the past in the production of identity, and the connections between discourses of gender and space. The volume seeks to generate conversation and debate amongst scholars of different disciplines, working across different locations and periods, and to open up directions for future work on space, place and identity in the medieval city.
