Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Charters of the Town of Kingston Upon Thames: Translated Into English, With Occasional Notes Accurate as he is in his general defcription, this Gentleman feems to have fallen into an error in one place, where he fiates that King {ton ceafed to be a borough, in confequence ofa petition from the corporation (recorded in the town-clerk's Office) the prayer of which was, that they might be relieved from the burden of fending Members to Parlia ment - and in fupport of which he refers the reader to [vj/25's ivoiz/id Parliamentaria. But this I apprehend is a miitake, for Ihave perufed this author, Without being able to meet with any fuch pa age; and i have fearched and made enquiries, but in vain, for the petition. It is more than probable, therefore, that this fiivilege was lof't merely by difcontrnuance, as was the cafe With {evei'al other places; and a {hort examination of the ancient method of carrying into execution the ele tive franchife will doubly warrant this fuppofition.
