Where this has not been the case, all the clauses bearing on a subject have been retained. As an instance, in illustration, the charter of 1873 originally con tained a clause vesting the Aldermen with the powers and duties of Supervisors; subsequently an amendment was enacted reviving the office of Supervisor and in effect re pealing the provision combining both of those offices in the same person, though omitting to do so in express terms. As the original section (sec. 19, Title II.) vested other powers in the Aldermen which were untouched by the amendment, it is for that reason preserved unaltered in this compilation. It is believed, however, this is the only instance of the kind to be found in it. The charter of 1854, as it stood when that of 1873 was enacted, is also given, for the reason that the present char ter refers frequently to provisions of existing laws, and in terms repeals only such as are inconsistent and in con flict with it.
