The acquisition of natural resources, especially fossil fuels, solid waste and wastewater production, as well as emission of gases and particulate matter from industrial plants and means of transport contribute to disturbances in the natural cycles of elements between different parts of the environment. Local changes lead to global effects, changing the composition of atmosphere, its capacity for absorbing the infrared radiation and temperature, which has further repercussions in the form of weather anomalies, melting glaciers, flooding, migration or extinction of species, social problems, etc. These global changes can be mitigated by local remedial actions, simultaneously taken all over the world, including Poland. Only the joint efforts of communities from different countries can be successful in preserving the world as we know it for the future generations. Realisation of this task requires the cooperation of experts across many fields of science, environmental engineering being one of most relevant. It comprises the engineering actions taken to preserve the balance of the natural environment or restore it if degradation has occurred. This monograph presents several key issues related to the actions aimed at mitigating the negative impact on the environment connected with the acquisition and transport of energy, management of municipal and industrial wastes, as well as the impact of the industry on the aquatic and soil environment. Thus a large number of usability engineering methods have been proposed to systematically develop software with high usability. A large number of studies indicate that even basic usability engineering methods are not integrated in software development lifecycles practiced in industrial settings. Yet problems in the adoption of methods by project teams are rarely examined. This book provides a new perspective on the integration and adoption of usability engineering methods by software development teams. The adoption of methods by project teams – contrary to popular belief – is not assured just because it is mandated by the organization. This work argues that usability engineering methods can only be regarded as integrated in the software development process of an organization when these methods are practiced and accepted by development teams. So far no frameworks for examining the acceptance of methods by project teams and for exploiting such data for guiding project teams in method deployment are available. To address this problem, this book presents an approach which consists of a process meta-model for guiding project teams in the deployment of usability en- neering methods and a measurement framework for measuring the acceptance of the deployed methods. The approach is called Adoption-Centric Usability Engineering.

Book excerpt: The ninth International Cryogenic Materials Conference (ICMC) was held on the campus of the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) in collaboration with the Cryogenic Engineering Conference (CEC) on June 11-14, 1991. The continuing bond between these two major conferences in the field of cryogenics is indicative of the extreme interdependence of their subject matter. The major purpose of the conference is sharing of the latest advances in low temperature materials science and technology. However, the many side benefits which accrue when this many experts gather, such as identification of new research areas, formation of new collaborations which often cross the boundaries of both scientific discipline and politics, and a chance for those new to the field to meet the old-timers, may override the stated purpose. This 1991 ICMC was chaired by F. R. Fickett of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. K. T. Hartwig, of Texas A&M served as Program Chairman with the assistance of eleven other Program Committee members. We especially appreciate the contributions of the CEC board and its Conference Chairman, J. Hendricks of Alabama Cryogenic Engineering, to the organization. of this joint conference. UAH hosted the conference. The local arrangements and management, under the watchful eye of Ann Yelle and Mary Beth Magathan of the UAH conference staff, were excellent. Participation in the CEC/ICMC continues to exceed expectations with 650 registrants for the combined conference.
