Book Effect of Grain Size on the Acoustic Emission Generated During Plastic Deformation of Copper

Download or read book Effect of Grain Size on the Acoustic Emission Generated During Plastic Deformation of Copper written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission signals from polycrystalline Al 1100 samples during plastic deformation were analyzed with respect to the strain rate and grain size. A kinematic model is proposed to account for the observed behavior. An experimental acoustic emission parameter, equivalent to the average energy of the acoustic events, correlates satisfactorily with the computed energy of moving dislocations during the deformation process. Both energies attain a maximum value for a certain grain size and are directly dependent on the strain rate.

Book Acoustic Emission and Microscopic Deformation and Fracture Processes

Download or read book Acoustic Emission and Microscopic Deformation and Fracture Processes written by Kanji Ono and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews diverse observations of acoustic emission from materials and attempt to interpret them on the basis of current knowledge of plastic deformation and fracture. Observed acoustic emission characteristics have been classified into five categories, which arises from heterogeneous and homogeneous yielding, dynamic strain aging, twinning and other heterogeneous deformation and strain induced transformation of acoustic emission during plastic deformation are examined in relation to these metallurgical aspects as well as the mechanical vibration viewpoint. For example, tensile deformation of magnesium is mainly via twinning, which generates shear mode acoustic emission. On the other hand, the yielding of a HSLA steel sample excites longitudinal resonances along the length of the sample. It is shown that the micro-yielding concept with suitable modifications best explains these acoustic emission behavior observed. This paper also reviews important aspects of measurement techniques and theoretical considerations of acoustic emission behavior.

Book Investigation of Acoustic Emission from Ceramic Materials

Download or read book Investigation of Acoustic Emission from Ceramic Materials written by Lloyd J. Graham and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency content, amplitude distribution, and rate of occurrence of acoustic emissions generated in model ceramic materials were determined. Single crystal MgO and glass, used as models of a ductile and a brittle ceramic, were mechanically loaded by three different means to produce rapid crack growth, controlled slow crack growth, and plastic deformation in both four-point bending and by cyclic bending at 100 cycles per second. A method was developed for easily determining the frequency spectrum of a single acoustic emission over the frequency range of 1 kHz to 3 MHz. The main results of the tests with the model materials were that no acoustic emissions were detected before rapid crack growth commenced or during slow crack growth in glass. Rapid crack growth produced acoustic emissions which had characteristic features in their frequncy spectra which seemed to depend on the size of the crack produced. Acoustic emissions were generated and were easily detected during plastic deformation of single crystal MgO. (Author).

Book Acoustic Emission Testing

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.

Book Acoustic Emission Generated by Dislocation Mechanisms During the Deformation of Metals

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Generated by Dislocation Mechanisms During the Deformation of Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission is a transient elastic wave generated by the rapid release of energy within a material. A wide variety of mechanisms have been proposed as possible sources of acoustic emission. Proposed mechanisms have included crack propagation, precipitate fracture, twin formation, martensite formation, dislocation motion and/or multiplication. This paper is concerned with acoustic emission generated by dislocation mechanisms operating during plastic deformation. Twinning and martensitic phase transformations are excluded even though dislocation motion is involved in the nucleation and growth of twins and the growth of martensite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents theoretical and experimental studies to establish the relationship between volume jumps of the 90° domain wall in a ferromagnetic material and the magnitude of the half-space surface displacement caused by it. A method of evaluating the influence of the external magnetic field on the stress intensity factor at the tip of the crack-like defects in ferromagnets is discussed. The influence of hydrogen on the generation of magneto-elastic acoustic emission signals of ferromagnets is described. The features of magneto-elastic acoustic emission due to the presence of plastic deformation, structural changes, and volumetric damage in such structural materials are shown.

Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Book Acoustic Emission Arising from Plastic Deformation and Fracture

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Arising from Plastic Deformation and Fracture written by Kanji Ono and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews current status of acoustic emission signal detection methods, theoretical analysis of acoustic emission sources and acoustic emission behavior of materials arising from plastic deformation and fracture. Recent developments in quantitative signal detection and transducer characterization are considered. Several theories of acoustic emission sources are summarized and one based on dislocation theory by Malen and Bolin is extended to provide a relation between the inelastic displacement at a source to the peak voltage output of a resonant transducer. Models of acoustic emission from plastic deformation are presented. A new model for continuous acoustic emission is developed on the basis of the modified Malen-Bolin theory. Predictions of the model are discussed in conjunction with recent studies on acoustic emission behavior as a function of test temperature and of heat treatment. Finally, acoustic emission due to cracking is evaluated, especially in relation to amplitude distribution analysis of burst-type emission. (Author).
