Book The Impact of Swirl in Turbulent Pipe Flow

Download or read book The Impact of Swirl in Turbulent Pipe Flow written by Akay Aydin Islek and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of swirl (i.e., flow with axial and azimuthal velocity components) on the turbulent flow in a pipe is studied using two-component laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV). There are practical motivations for the flow geometry. For example, previous studies demonstrate that introducing swirl in the tube bank of a paper machine headbox can significantly increase mixing, and hence increase fiber dispersion and orientation isotropy in the finished paper product. The flow characteristics in a pipe downstream of a single straight tapered fin, a single fin with 180ʻ twist but otherwise identical geometry, and four twisted fins were therefore studied at a pipe-based Reynolds number of 80,000. Radial profiles of the mean and rms fluctuations of the streamwise and azimuthal velocity components are measured; results for the straight and twisted single fin are compared to determine the effects of fin geometry and swirl on the turbulent wake downstream of the fin. From a practical viewpoint, it is also desirable to have "adjustable" swirl, where swirl can either be turned "on" or "off" depending upon the type of paper product being produced. The next generation "swirler" concept consists of fins fabricated from two-way shape memory alloys. Using the two-way memory effect, the fins will be in their straight configuration when "cold" and twisted configuration (hence acting as a swirler) when "hot". This study is the initial phase in developing new active control mechanisms, known as the Vortigen concept, for increasing productivity, and hence reducing wasted raw material and energy, in the pulp and paper industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirl flows are used in a wide range of industrial applications. In non-reacting cases, examples of applications include vortex amplifiers and reactors, heat exchangers, jet pumps, and cyclone separators. In reacting cases, swirlers are widely used in combustion systems, such as gas turbines, industrial furnaces, boilers, gasoline and diesel engines, and many other practical heating devices. Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book Turbulence Manipulation in Pipe Flow by Means of Swirl Polymer Additives and Suspensions of Nanoparticles in Water

Download or read book Turbulence Manipulation in Pipe Flow by Means of Swirl Polymer Additives and Suspensions of Nanoparticles in Water written by Ananchai U-Kaew and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence in a pipe flow was manipulated by the introduction of swirl, polymers and nanoparticles. Flow characteristics were measured by means of instantaneous differential pressure measurement, and Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). Experimental data reveal domination of swirl over polymer effects as evidenced by the fact that drag reduction by polymers is not as effective in swirling pipe flow. On the other hand, with polymers, pressure fluctuations are reduced in a broad range of swirl regimes. In the current sets of experiments, two swirling flow regimes were confirmed: low (sw 2, jet-like profile) and high (sw 2, wake-like profile) swirl regimes. Rankine vortex-like profiles were also observed where the vortex in the core region becomes enhanced with polymer addition. Suppression of turbulence near pipe wall was observed with the introduction of spherical and elongated nanoparticles. Experimental results also show that nanofluids are not candidates for drag reduction, but have the potential for heat transfer enhancement in pipe flow, possibly due to the effective change in properties of the fluid.

Book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 2

Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 2 written by F. Martelli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today understanding turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling flow problems in engineering. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects, which are nearly always important in practice, are still at an early stage of development. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulence momentum, heat and mass transfer. The 89 papers, including 5 invited papers, in this volume present and discuss new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The high standard of the contributions on the developing and testing of turbulent models attests to the world-wide interest this domain is currently attracting from researchers.
