Book Character of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Character of Abraham Lincoln written by Charles Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Character of Abraham Lincoln: President of the United States His public debates show him to be a man of superior powers. Perceiving at once the full force of his opponent's argument, he is ready to meet it in an open and manly manner, and to refute it by cool logic, rather than evade it by subtle sophistry. He seems to be peculiarly fond of a species of argumentum ad hominem - not by directly pressing his opponent with his own premises, and so putting him upon his defense, but by adopting his principles, and giving them that easy and familiar turn which gains the assent of his adversary and leads him to adopt, almost unconsciously, conclu sions at variance with his original deductions. By that familiar conversational reasoning, he often confutes his opponent, and leads him captive, even before he is aware that his own argument has been overthrown. Book Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Helen Nicolay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln When my father began collecting material to be used in his joint work with John Hay, "Abraham Lincoln: A History," he put certain things into an envelope marked "Personal Traits," meaning to make a chapter with that heading. As the work grew the items gathered under that head overflowed from one envelope into many; and at the same time it became manifest that a chapter with such a title would be out of place. Incidents illustrating Mr. Lincoln's personal traits found their rightful place elsewhere; and the authors argued that if the work as a whole did not reflect his character, it was labor lost. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by N. P. Chipman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Mr. President and Gentlemen - As I am informed, the Cherry Tree Club meets once each year to commemorate the birthday of the Father of his Country. Your club is composed almost entirely of'young men, most of whom were born since the close of the Civil War, and few, if any, of you were old enough at that time to have any personal recollection of the events that marked the most tragic period in the history of the Republic. I am asked to portray the character of the man who was not only the central figure in that Titanic struggle, but whose memory is, and will ever be, enshrined in the hearts of all' liberty-loving people throughout the habitable globe. May I not hope that you will bear with me if I shall attempt more than a brief pass ing tribute to the character of this remarkable man. May I not be indulged in an endeavor to quicken in your minds the meaning of that great epoch in our history, while bring ing to your attention some of the conspicuous characteristics of the man about whom I am to speak, and some of the events connected with which he will always be the one prominent personality. In devotion to his country; in breadth of statesman ship; in exalted character; in blameless private life, the name of Abraham Lincoln will grow brighter with the ages - the synonym of true greatness - the harbinger of that period to which we all look, of peace on earth, good will to man. In his early days he struck his roots deep down into the common soil of the earth, and in his latest years his head towered and shone among the stars! Book The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln written by Richard Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: An Address Delivered at the Hall of the Normal University, Normal, Ill., April 19, 1865 F our four items, the Edwards sermon is one of the scarcest. We can find no record of any copy sold, before the Burton sale of 1915 (where it brought and it is on the want list of leading collectors. The poem by Hon. B. B. French is also scarce, only seventy five copies having been printed. We have added Punch's tribute to Mr. Lincoln, as particularly appropriate. The Prayer of the Presidents is a scarce and also a peculiar item. Its author is given as F. S. Abiff, but the real name, as a Boston correspondent informs us, is unknown. The Holt address, to our mind, is one of the most interesting Lincoln items to be found. It is the only solution ever given to the mystery heretofore attaching to Lincoln's famous optical illusion of 1860. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him.
