Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry The object of this book is to furnish some answer to this question; to indicate to priests and preach ers what it is which induces half the population of New York city to lay aside their commercial pur suits and gather in their churches every seventh day; to interpret to themselves the men and women who form these congregations, and explain to them what it is that they are often unconsciously Seeking; and to indicate to those who rarely or never do go to church the advantage which they might secure if they were in this respect to conform to the custom, not only of their fellow countrymen in America, but of their fellow men throughout the world. The Christian minister fulfills a fourfold func tion: he is pastor, administrator, priest, and prophet or preacher. As pastor, he is the personal friend and counselor of his people; as administrator, the executive head of his church, which should be his force as well as his field. These two aspects of his work are not considered in this volume; it is de voted exclusively to a consideration of the minister as priest and prophet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry: With an Inquiry Into the Causes of Its Inefficiency The materials for this work have been brought from different depart. Ments Of the territory of the Church. Though the Writer has had a special regard to the Ministry of the Establishment (to which he is bound by the strongest and most endearing ties, and which occupies in his view the most commanding station in the Church of Christ) yet he would be sorry to refuse a cordial admission, and to neglect a diligent improve ment of the acknowledged excellences Of the honoured men of God in other communions.1 If he should be thought to have been too large in his references, he can only apologize by his anxiety to shelter his own statements (which in themselves could possess but little weight) by the strength of accredited authority. After all, he is deeply conscious, that this most responsible work has suffered - perhaps materially - from the unskilfulness of its treatment. He would desire, however, to be accepted of his brethren, ' '2 in a sin cere attempt to subserve the grand cause, to which they, equally with himself, are consecrated and he would beg to express his earnest desires to be favoured with private communications for the improvement of a second edition (should it ever be called for) for which purpose he sub joins his place of residence at full length. Book excerpt: The classic of Christian ministerial thought by Charles Bridges is presented to the reader anew in this superb edition, complete with the author's annotations. For the author, the curious point that the ministry failed in many of its core duties was sufficient genesis for a book. Why did this failure occur? Had modern priests and ministers lost their way from the tradition and essence of Christian belief? Were corruptions of the heart frequent and getting commoner? These questions are answered with unflinching sincerity: humans, including the ordained, have shortfalls which can only be assuaged by opening one's heart completely to God. The later parts of the text focus upon the essential duties of the churchman: preaching with the aim of uniting the congregation and community in an unstinting belief in the Lord is not a simple matter. Rather we discover it to be a diverse practice; the preacher must not only incorporate aspects of the doctrinal and scriptural truths, but be sensitive to the emotions of his churchgoers. The virtues of faith, be it a celebration of diligence or steadfastness against adversity, should be balanced against the human needs for well-being and spiritual contentment. A further element of ministerial duty is the pastoral work in the local community. This can be appealing to the unbelievers or infidels in the locality, visiting the sick or dying and offering comfort to their family, and being a source of spiritual counsel. A ready guard against backsliding, wherein members of a community gradually renounce their beliefs in God, equates to a need of vigilance in the minister. A lifelong man of God, Bridges was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. Graduating with honors, he entered the ministry and spent decades as a vicar in Old Newton, Suffolk and - in later life - Weymouth in Dorset. Together with his pastoral duties, he delved into the Bible and other ancient texts, becoming a theologian of great repute. Popular in his lifetime for his commentaries of scripture, the famed 19th century preacher C. H. Spurgeon declared one of Bridges' works to be "worth its weight in gold".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Evangelism: A Discourse, Delivered at the Seventh Anniversary of the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West, in the First Congregational Church of Norwalk, Conn., October 30th, 1850 The apostle had spoken of the character of his ministry in Corinth. As to its theme, it could not have been better; for he had known nothing in his preaching to the Corinthians but Christ and him crucified: but the tenor and style of his discourses to them had been comparatively inferior. The dif ference was to be ascribed in part to a defect of capacity in the Corinthians themselves. I could not, he says to them, speak to you as unto Spir itua], but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat, for ye were not able to bear it. He inti mates in the text, that his ministry would have been of higher excellence if the capability of the people had not been so imperfect. He did not speak to all in the same elementary strain which he had used in discoursing to the Corinthians. He sometimes had hearers who could profit by a more elevated mode of instruction, and then his manner rose in accommodation to their superior abilities.
