Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bliss Wiant went to China in 1923 with the lofty goal of some day introducing hymns to Chinese Christians that would not sound foreign to them. It was a goal that occupied much of his life. The locale of his work was Yenching University, which was arguably the premier institution of higher education in China. There he established a department of music, and enabled students to discover and develop their musical talents. There also he taught students who had never before seen a western musical score, to sing and to love Handel's Messiah and other great music of the west. In less than 10 years after its first performance, the reputation of the university chorus was such that it was invited by the government of China to present the Messiah in Nanking, the national capitol, as the finale to a two-week exposition of the arts. A major milestone in the pursuit of his life's goal was reached in that same year (1937), when a hymnal (English Title, "Hymns of Universal Praise") was published. This was the culmination of years of collaborative effort involving scores of individuals. Not only was the hymnal a uniquely inter-denominational achievement, it also included for the first time, a substantial number of original, indigenous hymns. Wiant's work in China produced in him a great love for the people as well as a deep admiration for their culture, which he saw both as misunderstood and unappreciated in the U.S. Consequently he devoted much of his energy in the years that followed to being a cultural ambassador, representing China to his own countrymen. An important manifestation of this was his work and that of his wife, Mildred, in translating into English a number of the Chinese hymns that first appeared in Hymns of Universal Praise. Several of these are now found in hymns used in the U.S., in effect closing a circle begun when Wiant went to China in 1923.

As China and the West demonstrates, the emergence of “Westernized” music from China—concurrent with the technological advances that have made global culture widely accessible—has not established a prominent presence in the West. China and the West brings together essays on centuries of Sino-Western musical exchange by musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and music theorists from around the world. It opens with a look at theoretical approaches of prior studies of musical encounters and a comprehensive survey of the intercultural and cross-cultural theoretical frameworks—exoticism, orientalism, globalization, transculturation, and hybridization—that inform these essays. Part I focuses on the actual encounters between Chinese and European musicians, their instruments and institutions, and the compositions inspired by these encounters, while Part II examines theatricalized and mediated East-West cultural exchanges, which often drew on stereotypical tropes, resulting in performances more inventive than accurate. Notice the bleating of the timid sheep, the lowing of herds, the singing of the lark, the animated cadence of the nightingale! What are all those voices but music, but a concert - a hymn which impresses the soul and elevates it to the ideal of infinite beauty? When man began to contemplate the vast universe, his attention was naturally directed to harmonious Nature. The singing of birds, above all, must have deeply impressed him and led him to vocal imitation. In the course of time he contrived to combine the natural sounds of his voice into a system, to arrange them into melodies agreeable to the ear, and, finally, to make instruments by which the melodies could be rendered. Mythology shows us orpheus, on the Thracian mountains, submitting the forest monsters to the power of his lyre; arion escaping submersion; amphion building cities. In the Holy Scriptures we are told of tubal cain, the sixth descendant from cain, manufacturing instruments; of moses singing a hymn with accompaniment of timbrels, after the passage of the Red Sea; and of King david playing on the harp. The Egyptian history mentions ptolemy philadelphus employing a band of 600 musicians to celebrate the feast of Bacchus; and ptolemy auletes, or the flute player, competing in his own palace with the greatest professional musicians. Indeed, no nation on earth has existed that did not love that enchanting art, however rude and artless the primitive systems may have been. It is everywhere an instinct of Nature, a want of the soul; it is found in the camps, in the forests, in the gilded palaces of the despots of the East, in the meadows of America; it cheers solitude; it charms society; it animates at the same time war and pastoral life. Elman uses over a thousand newly available examination records from the Yuan, Ming, and Ch'ing dynasties, 1315-1904, to explore the social, political, and cultural dimensions of the civil examination system, one of the most important institutions in Chinese history. For over five hundred years, the most important positions within the dynastic government were usually filled through these difficult examinations, and every other year some one to two million people from all levels of society attempted them. Covering the late imperial system from its inception to its demise, Elman revises our previous understanding of how the system actually worked, including its political and cultural machinery, the unforeseen consequences when it was unceremoniously scrapped by modernist reformers, and its long-term historical legacy. He argues that the Ming-Ch'ing civil examinations from 1370 to 1904 represented a substantial break with T'ang-Sung dynasty literary examinations from 650 to 1250. Late imperial examinations also made "Tao Learning," Neo-Confucian learning, the dynastic orthodoxy in official life and in literati culture. The intersections between elite social life, popular culture, and religion that are also considered reveal the full scope of the examination process throughout the late empire.
