This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ...D.B.; Wyleshamstede, E.T.; Wilshampsted, EA. The D.B. spelling solves the name. It is from A.S. Wines-hdmstede, where Wines is the gen. of Wini, later form Wine, a rather common name. Indeed, the A.S. wine simply means 'friend, ' though also employed as a personal name. The name should rather have been Winshamstead; but l was substituted for n not long after the Conquest. The sense is 'Wine's homestead.' The A.S. wine was pronounced winny. It occurs again in Wins-low (Bucks.), Wins-hill (Derb.). 38. STOxn. Stoke is closely related to stock, A.S. stoc, a stock, trunk of a tree, perhaps also sometimes the stump of a stone cross. It occurs in REDBOURNESTOKE, once a place-name, but now only surviving as the name of a hundred. Spelt Radbnrnestoch, Radeburnesoca, D.B.; Radeburnestoke, A.M.; Redbournestoke, F.A.; Radburnestok, H.R.; Rrwleborne, Radeburne, R.C.; Redburne, RE. I have shown, in my Place-names of Herts., that the names Radwell and Radnor may fairly be interpreted as meaning, respectively, 'red well' and 'red bank'; from the A.S. read, red. Sohere, I suppose the sense of Redbourne or Radbourne to be simply 'red bourne, ' i.e. red stream. We find to readan burnan, to the red bourne, in Birch, Cart. Saxon. iii. 587. Then Redbournestoke will refer to 'a stump near the red bourn.' The comparative redder is spelt radvlere in Political Songs, ed. Wright (Camden Society), p. 330. 39. STOW. Stow means 'a place'; whence the verb to bestow or stow away, to put into its place. It occurs in Elstow. It is clear to any one at all accustomed to these old spellings that, in the forms Eln-, Aln-, Aun--, we have to deal with a much abbreviated form; and the...

Book Chaplains in early modern England

Download or read book Chaplains in early modern England written by Hugh Adlington and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were early modern chaplains and what did they do? Chaplains are well known to have been pivotal figures within early modern England, their activities ranging from more conventionally religious roles (conducting church services, offering spiritual advice and instruction) to a surprisingly wide array of literary functions (writing poetry, or acting as scribes and editors). Chaplains in early modern England: Patronage, literature and religion explores the important, but often neglected, contributions made by chaplains of different kinds – royal, episcopal, noble, gentry, diplomatic – to early modern English culture. Addressing a period from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries, it focuses on chaplains from the Church of England, examining their roles in church and politics, and within both domestic and cultural life. It also shows how understanding the significance of chaplains can illuminate wider cultural practices – patronage, religious life and institutions, and literary production – in the early modern period.

Book A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies

Download or read book A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies written by Christopher Swift and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies explores fundamental issues and critical questions in chaplaincy, spanning key areas of health care, the prison service, education and military chaplaincy. Leading authors and practitioners in the field present critical insight into the challenges and opportunities facing those providing professional spiritual care. From young men and women in the military and in custody, to the bedside of those experiencing life’s greatest traumas, this critical examination of the role played by the chaplain offers a fresh and informed understanding about faith and diversity in an increasingly secular society. An invaluable compendium of case-studies, academic reflection and critical enquiry, this handbook offers a fresh understanding of traditional, contemporary and innovative forms of spiritual practice as they are witnessed in the public sphere. Providing a wide-ranging appraisal of chaplaincy in an era of religious complexity and emergent spiritualities, this pioneering book is a major contribution to a relatively underdeveloped field and sets out how the phenomenon of chaplaincy can be better understood and its practice more robust and informed.

Through this wide-ranging, yet thematically coherent approach, a fascinating window is opened into the world of Henry VIII and his court. In particular, building on research undertaken over the last ten years, a number of contributors focus on topics that have been neglected by traditional historical writing, for example gender, graffiti and clothing. With contributions from many of the leading scholars of Tudor England, the collection offers not only a snapshot of the latest historical thinking, but also provides a starting point for future research into the world of this colourful, but often misrepresented monarch.

Book Unapologetic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francis Spufford
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2013-10-15
  • ISBN : 0062300482
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book Unapologetic written by Francis Spufford and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Spufford's Unapologetic is a wonderfully pugnacious defense of Christianity. Refuting critics such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the "new atheist" crowd, Spufford, a former atheist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, argues that Christianity is recognizable, drawing on the deep and deeply ordinary vocabulary of human feeling, satisfying those who believe in it by offering a ruthlessly realistic account of the grown-up dignity of Christian experience. Fans of C. S. Lewis, N. T. Wright, Marilynne Robinson, Mary Karr, Diana Butler Bass, Rob Bell, and James Martin will appreciate Spufford's crisp, lively, and abashedly defiant thesis. Unapologetic is a book for believers who are fed up with being patronized, for non-believers curious about how faith can possibly work in the twenty-first century, and for anyone who feels there is something indefinably wrong, literalistic, anti-imaginative and intolerant about the way the atheist case is now being made.
