Book The Chaplain Vol 19

Download or read book The Chaplain Vol 19 written by Chaplains And Armed Forces Personnel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: December, 1962 Religious Education. Chapel construction and other supporting costs, compared to salaries for chaplains, would be in the ratio of, perhaps, four to one. Any proposal to reduce the size and scope of these ministries to the Armed Forces would be av poor reflection of concern for the religious and moral welfare of the personnel, and would be done in the face of vast and increasing amounts spent for weapons. Even if some church leaders felt such a scaling-down were desirable, so that the churches might be able to assume the whole burden them selves, it is not likely that such a decision would be, politically feasible. Nor would there be unanimity among the churches, since not all hold the same View regarding the inter-relation of church and state at such points as this. It Often is erroneously held that only the government contributes to the chaplaincy. Today it is a shared responsibility between church and state. The churches, as a part of their ministry to service per: sonnel, bear the cost of training and recruiting chaplain candidates. Chaplains are no longer recruited directly by the Armed Forces. The denominations provide candidates against a requested quota from each service. There is no Obligation to fill this quota. No man serves without the endorsement of his denomination, and that endorsement may be withdrawn, in effect, terminating the chaplain's eligibility to serve. It is at great loss to the denominational work of the churches that they send so many well-qualified ministers to this cooperative effort. Many feel that it is very appropriate that the government share in this loss to the full extent of the support now given. A very Old line of reasoning says that a man should not be required to bring his own weapon or his own food as he serves in the military today. The government should compensate, and make more efficient pro vision, for these needs. It is argued that the government has an even greater Obligation to supply chaplains as a substitute for the pastoral care available to the military man if he were a civilian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 19: June, 1962 Well, that is a dismal future, and I believe our most effective weapon against it is the kind of joy which Petrarch himself knew with books. If that can be kept alive - and who can imagine it can be obliterated even by the mass-homogenization of our culture - then the future is not lost, and the present has doors into greatness beyond 'itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging collection presents thirty essays by Muslim chaplains reflecting on their experiences as spiritual caregivers. Through their first-hand accounts, they impart how they skillfully apply the mercy and compassion of the Prophet Muhammad to the people in their care. They also share how their faith informs their service, how they navigate the obstacles of a predominantly Christian profession, and how they administer to the spiritual needs of people of different faiths or of no faith at all. Working in a variety of settings—including hospitals, prisons, universities, and the armed forces—Muslim chaplains encounter unique challenges on a daily basis, requiring them to call upon the resources of their Islamic faith with wisdom and tenderness. The contributors to this volume explore these circumstances vividly and honestly. Their personal stories are instructive of how Islamic principles can be employed with spiritual insight to bring strength and comfort to the sick and suffering.

Book Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty First Century written by Wendy Cadge and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Cadge and Shelly Rambo demonstrate the urgent need, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, to position the long history and practice of chaplaincy within the rapidly changing landscape of American religion and spirituality. This book provides a much-needed road map for training and renewing chaplains across a professional continuum that spans major sectors of American society, including hospitals, prisons, universities, the military, and nursing homes. Written by a team of multidisciplinary experts and drawing on ongoing research at the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab at Brandeis University, Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care in the Twenty-First Century identifies three central competencies—individual, organizational, and meaning-making—that all chaplains must have, and it provides the resources for building those skills. Featuring profiles of working chaplains, the book positions intersectional issues of religious diversity, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other markers of identity as central to the future of chaplaincy as a profession.

Book excerpt: Ronit Stahl traces the ways the U.S. military struggled with, encouraged, and regulated religious pluralism and scrambled to handle the nation’s deep religious, racial, and political complexity. Just as the state relied on religion to sanction combat missions and sanctify war deaths, so too did religious groups seek validation as American faiths.
