Book The Chaplain Vol 18 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chaplain Vol 18 Classic Reprint written by General Commission on Chaplai Personnel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 18 One day, following a presentation of the Passion Play of Oberammergau, a group of tourists wandered backstage to take some pictures of the cast and the sets. One strong man tried to lift the cross to his shoulder, but found it too heavy. Turning to Anton Lang who played the part of Christ in the play, he said: "Why don't you carry a lighter cross? No one would know the difference." Lang replied: "I could not take the part of Christ without feeling the weight of his cross." Such has always been the spirit of true discipleship. Jesus said, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Christianity meant literally that to the early Christians. It meant broken friendship, financial failure, painful persecution, physical danger, and personal sacrifice. It meant forsaking father, mother, sisters, brothers, husband, wife, children, and old friends in order to follow Christ. In contrast to this rugged sort of discipleship, think of the modern inclination to make Christianity as easy and attractive as possible. Modern preachers play up the rewards of Christianity rather than the requirements. They present Christianity as a way to find "peace of mind," "to win friends and influence people," to achieve success in business, and cultivate one's taste for the refinements of life. They play down what one must believe, go without, give, and do in order to be a Christian. In short, Christianity is offered as a bargain to get rather than as a vital cause to support. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 18: April, 1961 When we turn to the worship of the churches generally known as Reformed, no set forms appear to be either required or employed. Indeed the innumerable varieties of their acts of worship give to an outsider the impression of some confusion and chie y of an absence of meaning. It would appear that many sincere worshipers of this tradition do not care about liturgical order as long as the services are bright and the fellow ship warm, whatever these terms may connote. If one enters a Presby terian, Methodist, Congregational, Baptist, or Christian Church, in all likelihood he will find the various things that are done to be of good quality separately and individually (hymn singing, reading, preaching, etc.) but he will see no discernible shape to the series of acts, and therefore receives a vacant stare when he asks: What is the meaning of all this? And his query prompts us to ask ourselves: What has happened to our Reformed liturgical heritage? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is a good idea to know now what it really is, for our own sake and that of our hearers, and for God's sake, too. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 26: November-December, 1969 It is most fitting that this traditional observance is to be held during the week of Thanksgiving, For as each of us pauses to re ect on the meaning of the Bible in our lives, we surely have some special instance for which to express our thanks to God for strengthening our faith through Holy Writ. I am especially reminded of Benjamin Franklin's immortal thought when he remarked that if no sparrow can fall to the ground without His notice, no nation can rise from the ground without His help. Throughout our history, despairing men and women have found sus taining solace in the word of God as written in the Bible. Families have been guided by its enlightened precepts. Statesmen and leaders have drawn inspiration from its teachings, and. Courage from the enriching experience it records. It is unique among books and treasured by men and nations. And the power of the universal truths it holds is appropriately refreshed within our hearts on this occasion. The past has truly proved that we have much to gain by our devotion to the Scriptures. And the future holds great promise if we heed past lessons well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
