They were without doubt known to, and most probably held in possession by the Romans, as Caesar, in his Commentaries, refers to islands on the coast of Normandy, in which some of the Britons took refuge. The ancient name of Jersey, Caesarea, is more ample proof of this; the words Jer, or Ger, and likewise Cher, are said by Camden, in his " Insulis Britannicis," to be corrupt" abbreviations of Csesar, as the name of Cherbourg, a seaport of Normandy, is so called from Caesaris-burgum. Jersey also (the final ey signifying an island--as in Angles-ey, the isle of the Angles) is a corruption of Caesar's island. There are, besides, many remains of ruined fortifications of Roman character both in Jersey and in Guernsey. Near Mont Orgueil Castle, in Jersey, there is an ancient fortress, called to this day Le Fort de Caesar: and at Rozal christianity introduced. 197 there is an entrenchment still bearing the name of La Petit Cesaree. In Guernsey there is the romantic promontory of precipitous rocks called Jerbourg, derived, as we have shown above, from the corruption of the name Voesaris-hurgum.
