Book Economic Geography

Download or read book Economic Geography written by B. W. Hodder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the many lines of thought in the literature on economic geography and ties these various aspects together within the concept of the economy. The book focusses on the dynamic and integrated nature of economies at different scales and levels of development. Emphasis is laid on the processes at work within economies. The authors discuss the concept of the economy, helping both to clarify the nature of economic activity and to reveal the importance and sources of economic power as the underlying means of control in economies. They also demonstrate that the operation of an economy and the distribution of economic power are critical influences on many other, apparently non-economic, aspects of human existence.

Book On Borrowed Time

Download or read book On Borrowed Time written by John E. Tilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sharp rise in mineral use has revived concern about scarcity. Economist John Tilton responds by analyzing recent trends in the consumption and availability of minerals that are most integral to the needs of modern civilization. He reminds readers that, if the arguments about scarcity sound familiar, it is because the story of minerals scarcity is almost as old as human history-and so too is substitution and technological innovation. The issue at hand is the unprecedented acceleration in exploitation and use. Given global population growth, rising living standards, and environmental concerns, how seriously should today‘s society take the threat of mineral exhaustion? On Borrowed Time? provides general interest and student readers with an accessible framework for understanding scarcity. Tilton defines important concepts and explores the methods used to study mineral scarcity, including physical measures of known reserves and the total resource base, and economic measures, such as extraction and end-user costs. He notes the increasing emphasis on the social and environmental costs of mineral production and use, placing the scarcity debate in context of broader concerns about sustainability and equity. He adds a history of thought about scarcity, from Malthus and Ricardo to Harold Hotelling, Donella Meadows, to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Midwestern History Association's 2016 Hamlin Garland Prize The Iron Range earned its name honestly: it was once among the world’s richest iron ore mining districts. The Iron Range propelled the U.S. steel industry in the late nineteenth century, and iron mining sustained generations in the region with work and a strong economy. But long before most other parts of the country faced the realities of industrial decline, Minnesota’s Iron Range was already striving to maintain its core industry. In Taconite Dreams: The Struggle to Sustain Mining on Minnesota’s Iron Range, 1915–2000, Jeffrey T. Manuel examines how the region fought the dislocation that came with economic changes, technological advances, and global shifts in industrial production. On the Iron Range, efforts included the development of taconite mining as a technological fix for the drop in hematite mining. Manuel describes the Iron Range’s modern history and how the downturn was opposed by individuals, civic groups, and commercial interests. The first book dedicated to thoroughly exploring this era on the Iron Range, Taconite Dreams demonstrates how the area fit into a larger story of regions wrestling with deindustrialization in the twentieth century. The 1964 taconite amendment to Minnesota’s constitution, the bruising federal pollution lawsuit that closed a taconite plant, and the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board’s economic development policy are all discussed. Ultimately, the resistance against economic decline is also a battle over mining’s memory and legacy, one that continues today. Manuel’s history sheds much-needed light on this important yet widely overlooked mining region as well as the impact of the past century’s struggles on the people who call it home.

Book Modern World Development

Download or read book Modern World Development written by Michael Chisholm and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of Adam Smith, there has been a voluminous literature concerned with the differing wealth of nations and the variation in the nature of economic growth, and several schools of thought have held precedence at different times. The fundamental mechanisms have been regarded by some as capital accumulation and investment, and by others as entrepreneurial ability. Modern World Development, first published in 1982, shows that the length of time under consideration materially affects the relative significance assigned to the factors involved; similarly, the size of an area cannot be ignored. Through an examination of the major theories of economic growth, the role of natural resources, the core-periphery model of world development, environmental change and the concept of ‘human capital’, Professor Chisholm has written a stimulating and important book which will appeal to students of economics, history and geography.

Book The Economics of the World Iron and Steel Industry

Download or read book The Economics of the World Iron and Steel Industry written by Otavio Ribeiro de Medeiros and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an analysis of the world iron and steel industry from 1950 to 1980. After presenting a technical overview describing the technological possesses in use during that period by the steel, the iron ore and the ferrous scrap industries, we describe and analyse, on economic grounds, the market structure and the market forces that shaped the iron and steel industry from the beginning of the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. After analysing the market structure of the iron ore and the steel industry, we argue that bilateral monopoly is an adequate framework to deal with the iron and steel market during that period, and that the steel industry has stronger market power to influence iron ore prices to its advantage.
