Book An Historical Introduction to American Education

Download or read book An Historical Introduction to American Education written by Gerald L. Gutek and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guteks classic volume on the history of American education has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide a twenty-first-century perspective on the development of American educational institutions. Like earlier editions, the well-researched Third Edition employs a topical approach to examine the evolution of key institutions like the common school and the high school, as well as significant movements like progressive education, racial desegregation, and multiculturalism. Primary source readings enhance and reinforce chapter content and feature new writings from Benjamin Rush, Horace Mann, Maria Montessori, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Dewey, and Jane Addams. Two new chapters add depth to this comprehensive, richly illustrated work. Immigration, Multiculturalism, and Education examines the response of public schools to the education of immigrant children in the context of Americas industrialization and urbanization. This compelling addition also looks at the changing demographics of immigration and discusses the experiences and contributions of Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans. Progressive Education and John Dewey explores the origins of progressive education, the philosophies of John Dewey and other leading progressive educators, and this movements ongoing influence in American classrooms. The Third Editions topical organization lends itself to multiple uses in the classroom. Each chapter provides the historical foundation for the study of a contemporary topic in education, including the organization and structure of schools, the philosophy of education, early childhood education, curriculum and instruction, multicultural and bilingual education, and educational policy.

Book Careers in Science and Technology

Download or read book Careers in Science and Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every industrialized country is concerned with maintaining an adequate supply of individuals interested in careers in science and technology, yet little is known about these efforts outside national borders. This book represents the proceedings of an international conference on Trends in Science and Technology Careers, held in Brussels in 1993. Organized at the behest of OSEP and the OIA Committee on International Organizations and Programs, in cooperation with the European Commission (DG XII) and in response to a resolution of the International Council of Scientific Unions, the conference identified international data on career trends, assessed the research base engaged in studying science and technology careers, and identified ways in which international organizations could promote greater interest in science and technology human resource development. The conference laid the groundwork for continuing international discussions about the best ways to study and promote careers in science and technology and national dialogues about the ways to integrate this knowledge into human resources policies.

Book Sociology and School Knowledge

Download or read book Sociology and School Knowledge written by Geoff Whitty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of a radical 'new' sociology of education during the early 1970s focused attention on the nature of school knowledge. Although this new approach was set to revolutionize the subject, within a few years, many people considered these developments an eccentric interlude, with little relevance to curriculum theory or practice. First published in 1985, this book offers a more positive view of the new sociology of education and its contribution to our understanding of the curriculum. In doing so, it argues that some of the radical promise of the new sociology of education could be realised, but only if sociologists, teachers and political movements of the left work more closely together

This book was released on 1991-05-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacular economic and technological achievements of certain Far Eastern countries have attracted world wide attention. The markets of the West are dominated by the products of countries with no traditions of industrialisation and few natural resources. The reaction to this phenomenon has been a mixture of amazement, admiration, envy and, curiosity to know how it was done. This book addresses these questions through a study of the modernisation of three of the most successful Asian societies - Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
