Book excerpt: From Central Asia surviving great battles, war, migrating to the mountains of Laos and resettlement in Thailand to the United States, the Hmong people have come a long way. Living in the United States the Hmong elders have resisted assimilation fearing that their children would lose all family traditions and values. The younger generations quickly acculturated transforming from traditional roles taking on new opportunities while living in the United States. Hmong daughters and nyabs are choosing to go against what people from rural Laos view as an unchangeable tradition, of following the path of getting married young and having as many children as possible. This thesis explores the contested nature of the Hmong women's identity and their roles as it was back in their homeland, their struggles assimilating in the United States and their influences to pursue or not pursue higher education.

Book excerpt: Since their settlement in the United States, Hmong American women have established themselves in professional organizations across various disciplines as lawyers, teachers, university professors, medical doctors, and political leaders. However, the data on the education achievement of Hmong American women reveal that Hmong American women have one of the lowest educational attainments. According to the 2015 American Community Survey, 20.8% of Hmong American women ages 25 and over has a bachelor or higher degree, whereas 31.9% of White women, 22.4% of Black women and 16.1% of Hispanic women the ages 25 or over. This study will explore, through narrative inquiry, the educational experiences of Hmong American women in college or university; focusing on understanding how their gender and cultural roles influence their educational experiences. This study is guided by the following three question research questions: 1.What do the stories told by Hmong American women reveal about their educational experiences in higher education? 2.What do the stories told by Hmong American women indicate about the challenges they face with their family and culture? 3.What do the stories told by Hmong American women reveal about their identity as Hmong women? This study will be conducted through a conceptual lens incorporating a review of the existing literature from four research streams: (a) the Hmong, (b) the educational achievement and experiences of Hmong American students, (c) Critical Race Theory, and (d) ethnic identity. It will also be conducted through the theoretical lens of Critical Race Theory and the social constructivist paradigm.

Book excerpt: This study is a mixed method research looking at Hmong women and their pursuit of higher education. It is a norm in the Hmong culture for women to have less privilege than men which leads to less freedom and more household chores. Studies have been done by other researchers in the 1990's and found these cultural norms as barriers to higher education among Hmong women. This study looks at the barriers to see if it limits women's opportunities to pursue a college degree but will also compare if there are differences between Hmong men and women. The hypothesis is that distance away from home may be an issue among the Hmong population when choosing a college for their daughters. Data will be collected by surveying Hmong college students in Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as interviewing Hmong college students, parents, and educators. Suggestions for future research will be to focus on men's pursuit of higher education.

Book excerpt: This research project examines the education attainment disparity in higher education regarding Hmong female and male students. The purpose of this project is to highlight reasons for the unbalance achievement rate of college degrees between the two genders at California State University, Sacramento. Of the information gathered, it was revealed and made apparent that changes in gender roles - both females and males - have and continue to contribute to the attainment of higher education. Also, the research yielded data into how education is used as a source of empowerment for Hmong female students who come from traditionally patrilineal existence. All in all, Hmong female students achieved their college degrees at a higher rate; showing 56. 6% compared to 39.2% from their male colleagues. The research project also provides plausible recommendations for future research into similar and relevant topics.

Older generations hold a high expectation of their daughters to keep the traditional Hmong ways of caring for their immediate family until they are married. Encouragement for males to obtain a higher education may seem more likely to happen. School Counselors are expected to learn of multicultural counseling to effectively reach out to all students. It's important for school counselor's to know of and learn about the Hmong culture to effectively help Hmong students and give them resources necessary to obtain a higher education.

It negotiates both Hmong American political and cultural citizenship, meticulously rewriting the established view of the Hmong as “new” Asian neighbors—an approach articulated, Hollywood style, in Clint Eastwood’s film Gran Torino. The collection boldly moves Hmong American studies away from its usual groove of refugee recapitulation that entrenches Hmong Americans points-of-origin and acculturation studies rather than propelling the field into other exciting academic avenues. Following a summary of more than three decades’ of Hmong American experience and a demographic overview, chapters investigate the causes of and solutions to socioeconomic immobility in the Hmong American community and political and civic activism, including Hmong American electoral participation and its affects on policymaking. The influence of Hmong culture on young men is examined, followed by profiles of female Hmong leaders who discuss the challenges they face and interviews with aging Hmong Americans. Book excerpt: The opportunity for self-discovery is relatively new to Hmong women whose traditional role has been to remain in the home. Through the voices of five Hmong women enrolled at Merced College during 2017, this study sought to understand how contemporary Hmong American women negotiated modern and traditional values to engage in formal education and select their careers. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: Restriction was a salient cultural practice within the Hmong family structure, the loss of identity and agency, education as a search for freedom, and career selection as a turning point. As a whole, these themes represent the process of self-affirmation that young Hmong women experience as they distance themselves from the family context to build an autonomous lifestyle. Participants shared the experiences of physical, emotional, and intellectual restrictions that are constitutive of cultural practice in multiple Hmong families. Participants emphasized that Hmong culture is both challenged and preserved by the actions and decisions of family members. Although the experiences of restriction engendered the loss of individuality and autonomous decision-making, these young Hmong women found pathways for self-expression and achievement through education. Participation in education provided these Hmong women with a different outlook on traditional gender roles and career opportunities. The participants’ selection of careers became a turning point that encouraged them to reexamine who they were and who they could become.

Book excerpt: Recent educational trends for Hmong American women have been the pursuit of postsecondary education and the development of new self-identities as first- and second- generation college students. As the researcher and participant, I am exploring how my lived experience within the broader context of the postsecondary American educational system shaped my identity as a Hmong American woman at a predominantly White institution in the Midwest. Through qualitative research, this scholarly personal narrative study is guided by one main research question and four sub-questions. The guiding question: How has my lived experience within the broader context of the postsecondary American educational system shaped my identity as a Hmong American woman? The sub-questions include: (a) Who am I? (b) Who do I pretend to be? (c) Who do I want to become? and (d) Where do I belong? Using a postmodernist paradigm, the conceptual framework utilized the Hmong story cloth and the culturally engaging campus environment models. Three themes were identified. The researcher recommends more narrative studies about the Hmong American women experience in higher education.
