Book Teacher Perceptions of the Changing Role of the Secondary Middle School Principal

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of the Changing Role of the Secondary Middle School Principal written by Dawn E. Coffin and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The focus of this study was to examine perceptions of middle school teachers regarding the changing role of the secondary middle school principal and compare teachers' results with assistant principals' and principals' perceptions of their role, thus adding the voice of teachers, regarding the secondary principal's role, to existing literature. Data was collected electronically using the survey method in one urban Florida school district. Qualitative and quantitative data were captured using the Principal's Role Questionnaire (PRQ) (Goodwin, 2002). Thirty-six principal role descriptor statements on the PRQ survey requested a level of agreement from research participants regarding changes, current and future roles of the secondary principal. Four open ended comment requests allowed participants to comment on the principal's role in those areas. Role descriptor statements were categorized into four areas: strategic leadership, instructional leadership, organizational leadership and political and community leadership. Quantitative findings revealed that teacher perceptions regarding the secondary middle school principal's role were significantly significant for only 14 of the 36 role descriptors when compared to principals' scores. Teachers' mean score ratings were lower than principals' for all 36 PRQ items, however their scores were considered in agreement, as no score was lower than 2.52. Lower score ratings for all 36 PRQ items suggested somewhat of a disconnection between principals and teachers as to the principal's role. Qualitative findings from teachers varied from an understanding of the principal's role to suggestions for the principal. Further research is needed to determine secondary principal role expectations that are important and desired by secondary teachers.

Book excerpt: From the Effective Schools Movement in the 1980s to the recent adoption of Common Core State Standards by most of the states in the United States, educational leaders have sought to find ways to raise the achievement levels of all students. Common Core State Standards are the most comprehensive school reform since the beginning of the standards movement. The complex change required for implementation of Common Core requires principal leaders to determine effective strategies for dealing with implementation challenges and teacher resistance to change. A growing body of educational research has focused on the impact of the site principal on multiple school outcomes, including leading the change process. This dissertation provides an overview of principal leadership theories, the impact of the site principal on multiple school effects, review of reform movements, and present the complex change principals are leading as teachers implement Common Core State Standards.

Book Examining Teachers Perceptions of Teacher and Principal Leadership as They Relate to School Improvement in a Suburban High School

Download or read book Examining Teachers Perceptions of Teacher and Principal Leadership as They Relate to School Improvement in a Suburban High School written by Timothy E. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher and principal leadership and its affect upon school improvement, Specifically, this study explores teachers' perceptions of teacher and principal leadership and how these perceptions impact one school's effort for school improvement. Finally, the study addresses what aspiring principals need to know about teacher perceptions of teacher leadership and the ways that teachers perceive that a principal supports and fosters teacher leadership. Using a phenomenographic approach, 13 teachers and one administrator were interviewed at a high school in a large mid-western city. In addition, field observations and document analyses were conducted. Data were analyzed using constant comparative method through which several themes were developed and later integrated into a conceptual framework. Findings indicated that teacher leadership affects school improvement and that principal leadership helps to influence, support, and sustain both teacher leadership and school improvement. By developing a sense of responsibility beyond the classroom, being role models for students and teachers, acting as professional resources for colleagues, building relationships and making connections with students, teacher leaders affect school improvement. One role of the principal is to influence, support, and sustain teacher leadership so that teacher leadership will sustain school improvement over a long period of time. Through supporting and communicating with teachers as well as building a sense of openness and trust, the principal empowers and encourages teachers to continue to improve the educational opportunities for themselves and their students. This study concludes that the role of the principal is critical in influencing, supporting and sustaining both teacher leadership and school improvement. The significant role of school improvement in education in the last five years cannot be achieved through a single person or position of authority. Principals need the essential skills to create, support, and maintain-the leadership capacity of their teachers.

Book The Correlation of the Perceived Leadership Style of Middle School Principals to Teacher Job Satisfaction and Efficacy

Download or read book The Correlation of the Perceived Leadership Style of Middle School Principals to Teacher Job Satisfaction and Efficacy written by Jack Dale (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative study addressed the idea that a middle school principal could possibly impact teacher effectiveness in the classroom through the relationship of the teacher- perceived leadership style of the principal to teacher job satisfaction and efficacy. The sample consisted of 142 certified teachers from 8 public middle schools in an East Tennessee school district. Teachers completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, (Bass & Avolio, 2004) and the Job Satisfaction Survey, (Spector, 1994). Findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership did not have a statistically significant relationship to teacher job satisfaction. A new insight from this study suggests that principals should find ways to lead beyond teacher perceptions to address the needs of teachers in order to promote and encourage higher levels of teacher job satisfaction. Furthermore, findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership style had a statistically significant relationship to teacher efficacy. Findings from the exploratory question at the end of the surveys further validated this study by indicating teachers perceived their need for principal leadership to help them become more effective in the classroom by incorporating elements of both transformational and transactional leadership. This research may assist in developing leadership style training for principals desiring to indirectly influence academic achievement by influencing teacher job satisfaction and efficacy within their schools.

Book Leadership Responsibilities and Student Achievement

Download or read book Leadership Responsibilities and Student Achievement written by Jennifer Severson Bean and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined principal and teacher perceptions of leadership behavior which influenced the achievement of students, particularly those living in poverty. The students attended a high achieving elementary school where a majority were eligible for free and reduced lunch. This study also examined the principal responsibilities which the principal and teachers in this elementary school perceived to decline as a result of changes designed to increase student achievement. The study took place in a school district in Central Pennsylvania. The participants were a school principal and 10 teachers serving in a Title I distinguished high achieving, high poverty, elementary school. A questionnaire adapted and based on the findings of Marzano; Waters; and McNulty (2005), relating to principal leadership responsibilities linked to student achievement, and an interview were used in this study. These were administered to the principal and teachers in the school district. Analysis of the data suggested that use of the 7 responsibilities associated with second-order change were implemented by the principal in the participating district. Four of these, Monitoring and Evaluating; Optimizer; Intellectual Stimulation; and Ideals/Beliefs, were evidenced to a greater degree than others. Four responsibilities were seen to decline; these responsibilities were: Culture; Communication; Order; and Input. Some other responsibilities, although not targeted in the study, surfaced as strong characteristics or actions of the principal. These responsibilities were Affirmation, Focus, Situational Awareness, and Visibility.

Book The Changing Role of the Principal

Download or read book The Changing Role of the Principal written by Lee Alvoid and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal has historically been portrayed in television and film as decidedly unheroic. In the public mind, principals were often thought of as mere school-building managers, individuals who were more interested in wielding power and enforcing compliance than in the loftier concerns of teaching and learning. Today, however, those stale notions could not be further from the truth. The job of a modern-day principal has transformed into something that would be almost unrecognizable to the principals of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. This report examines the changing landscape of school leadership, most notably as a result of increased expectations around instructional improvement and teacher development. Also included are a series of case studies that shine a light on innovative ways in which districts are training and supporting school leaders so that they are able to meet the ever-increasing demands placed upon them, such as a strategic focus on coaching and instructional feedback, customized professional development, streamlining of the principal's job duties, and partnerships with universities and nonprofits to train the next generation of principals. The report concludes with the appendix: Interviews with District Experts.

Book Improving School Leadership

Download or read book Improving School Leadership written by Catherine H. Augustine and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the nation's public schools is one of the highest priorities of federal, state, and local government in America. Recent research has shown that the quality of the principal is, among school-based factors, second only to the quality of the teacher in contributing to what students learn in the classroom. New programs to develop school leaders who can exercise vigilance over instruction and support effective teaching practices are not likely to succeed, however, if they are inconsistent with other state and district policies affecting school leadership. The Wallace Foundation, which focuses its grantmaking in education primarily on school leadership, has posited that well-coordinated policies and initiatives to develop leadership standards, provide high-quality training, and improve the conditions that affect principals' work will increase their ability to improve instruction in their schools. This study documents the actions taken by the Foundation's grantees to create a more cohesive set of policies and initiatives to improve instructional leadership in schools; describes how states and districts have worked together to forge such policies and initiatives around school leadership; and examines the hypothesis that more-cohesive systems do in fact improve school leadership. The study found that it is possible to build more-cohesive leadership systems and that such efforts appear to be a promising approach to developing school leaders engaged in improving instruction. Although the study did not find evidence that the full underlying theory behind this initiative is sound, it did find a correlation between improved conditions for principals and their engagement in instructional practices.
