Book Growing Populations Changing Landscapes

Download or read book Growing Populations Changing Landscapes written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world's population exceeds an incredible 6 billion people, governmentsâ€"and scientistsâ€"everywhere are concerned about the prospects for sustainable development. The science academies of the three most populous countries have joined forces in an unprecedented effort to understand the linkage between population growth and land-use change, and its implications for the future. By examining six sites ranging from agricultural to intensely urban to areas in transition, the multinational study panel asks how population growth and consumption directly cause land-use change, and explore the general nature of the forces driving the transformations. Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes explains how disparate government policies with unintended consequences and globalization effects that link local land-use changes to consumption patterns and labor policies in distant countries can be far more influential than simple numerical population increases. Recognizing the importance of these linkages can be a significant step toward more effective environmental management.

Book Population Dynamics of a Minority Community

Download or read book Population Dynamics of a Minority Community written by Puthupparampil Mathew Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is a historical examination of the demographic changes that have taken place in a minority community (Christians), in a small state (Kerala) of a large underdeveloped country (India), which is undergoing the process of demographic transition. Examination of the available data shows that the Christians in Kerala have higher birth rate and rate of growth as compared to the majority group, the Hindus. When compared to another similar minority group, the Muslims, the Christian birth rates of growth seem to be comparable. In the absence of the use of any voluntary fertility limiting practices the explanation for the differential fertility behaviour, lies in the socio-cu1tural, economic and occupational differences that exist between these religious groups. Actually it is felt that the "religious affiliation", served as a proxy for a number of socio-economic characteristics. The minority group status was found to be an unimportant factor because the Christian population originally branched off from the majority population, the Hindus, through a process of conversion. They share a lot of common social and cultural practices. Since the majority and minority communities live in peace and harmony, competition between them for numerical superiority is not a factor in the differential fertility behaviour. A comparison between India and Kerala shows that Kerala has the lowest birth rate among all Indian statesnow. However, the rate of growth of population in Kerala is slightly higher than the all India average. This is due to the fact that Kerala has very low mortality rate as well. Higher levels of literacy, better standards of public health and hygiene are the determinants of this very low mortality. It is noted that the relatively high rate of growth of population is the greatest threat to the social and economic development of Kerala and to overcome this problem, birth rate has to be reduced drastically. Experience of the seventies shows that enlightened family planning program can contribute towards the solution of the population problem even in the absence of a dramatic change in the economy of a region. It is believed that the pattern shown by Kerala may be a model for India.

Book Migration and Development

Download or read book Migration and Development written by Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography is destiny for most populations. At this juncture of its demographic transition, it is, however, migration that is destiny for the Kerala population According to the first Kerala Migration Study (1999), migration had provided the single most dynamic factor in the otherwise dismal economic scenario of Kerala in the last quarter of the twentieth century. This Book documents Kerala's deepening socio-economic nexus with the Gulf countries through emigration based on the second Kerala Migration Survey conducted in 2004, funded the South Asian Network of Economic Institutes (SANE) and the special grant from the Centre for Development Studies, Kerala. It provides information on the size, trend, geographical distribution, socio-economic composition of migrants, and remittances sent home by migrants.// Analysis based on this new study indicates that migration is continuing to provide the most dynamic factor in the economic growth of Kerala State in the new century. The new century is likely to see migration encompassing a wider section of the Kerala population and the migration-impact spreading to newer sectors of the Kerala economy. Migrants of the 21st century would be structurally different from those of the 20th century. They would be better qualified and would be occupying higher positions in the job market abroad. The economic and political climate in the State seems to be becoming more receptive to profitable investments in developmental projects on a much larger scale in the coming decades. Emigration is likely to bring in, besides the much-needed capital, entrepreneurship and business leadership for Kerala's development. Migration is poised to determine more closely Kerala's destiny in the socio-economic development in the coming decades.

Book Population and Land Use in Developing Countries

Download or read book Population and Land Use in Developing Countries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable book summarizes recent research by experts from both the natural and social sciences on the effects of population growth on land use. It is a useful introduction to a field in which little quantitative research has been conducted and in which there is a great deal of public controversy. The book includes case studies of African, Asian, and Latin American countries that demonstrate the varied effects of population growth on land use. Several general chapters address the following timely questions: What is meant by land use change? Why are ecological research and population studies so different? What are the implications for sustainable growth in agricultural production? Although much work remains to be done in quantifying the causal connections between demographic and land use changes, this book provides important insights into those connections, and it should stimulate more work in this area.

Book Social Development Cultural Change Fertility Decline

Download or read book Social Development Cultural Change Fertility Decline written by Kuttan Mahadevan and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1987-12-31 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low fertility rates are usually associated with high levels of economic development. The Indian state of Kerala is an exception -- despite a comparatively low level of economic development, the fertility rate is declining rapidly. This book studies the determinants of declining fertility rates. The authors have developed a model -- applicable to other regions in the developing world -- which focuses on social development and cultural change as causes of declining fertility and, more importantly, an improvement in the quality of life.
