Book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes

Download or read book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes written by Rayna Sansanwal and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Given the rise in the availability, accessibility, and appeal of gambling activities, gambling as a high-risk behaviour has become a major concern among college students. Student-athletes, in particular, represent a vulnerable subgroup of the college student population with regards to engagement in gambling activities, as prevalence studies have consistently indicated that student-athletes who participate in club or intercollegiate sports are significantly more likely to experience gambling-related problems than their non-athletic counterparts. This thesis is comprised of two manuscripts that aimed to extend current research regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes by conducting a cross comparison of survey data collected from three large samples of NCAA student-athletes in 2004, 2008, and 2012 regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes in order to gain insight into how the landscape of gambling and attitudes among college student-athletes has changed within the last eight-years in relation to the ongoing expansion of gambling opportunities. The first manuscript paid particular attention to gender and sport affiliation differences; while the second manuscript focused on divisional differences. It was expected that student-athletes would progressively show more pro-gambling attitudes towards over the eight-year span, which would result in an increase in gambling participation rates between 2004 and 2012. Results indicated that gambling, as a recreational activity, was perceived as being more acceptable in 2012 than in previous years. However, despite this surge in pro-gambling attitudes, gambling participation rates were generally lowest for all gambling activities in 2012. Therefore, the results suggest that in spite of the growth of the gambling industry, gambling activity among student-athletes is on a downward trend. Outcomes of the current research not only inform NCAA policies surrounding gambling, but also aid in the development of educational, prevention, and intervention initiatives at the college level. Book Gambling Behavior Among Club intramural recreational CIR College Student Athletes Attending Division II and Division III Universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Download or read book Gambling Behavior Among Club intramural recreational CIR College Student Athletes Attending Division II and Division III Universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania written by Robert M. Mehalik and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed gambling behaviors among Club/Intramural/Recreational (CIR) athletes attending state and private universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania. More specifically, the researcher examined CIR student athlete’s gambling behavior and participation in gambling activities at Division II institutions, including mid-sized state/public colleges or universities, and Division III institutions, including small private colleges or universities. Using a Survey Research Design, this study identified significant group differences in gambling involvement, types of gambling students participate in, and gambling related issues/problems across CIR student athlete/nonathlete populations as well as across Division II and III institutions. This study fills a gap in academic literature pertaining to gambling behavior and CIR athletes. Additionally, this research study adds to the existing literature to help better understand gambling behaviors, problem gambling, and pathological gambling occurring with college students. The findings of this study have the ability to impact the way gambling prevention programs are presented and administered to college students and specific student populations.

Book A Meta analytical Synthesis and Examination of Pathological and Problem Gambling Rates Among College Students and Student athletes

Download or read book A Meta analytical Synthesis and Examination of Pathological and Problem Gambling Rates Among College Students and Student athletes written by Donald E. Nowak and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of gambling addiction is especially noteworthy among college students and student-athletes, many of whom have the resources, proximity, free time, and desire to become involved in the myriad options of gambling now available. Although limited attention has been paid specifically to college student gambling in the body of literature, there have been three published meta-analyses estimating the prevalence of probable pathological gambling among college students. This dissertation is the largest and most comprehensive, presenting an up-to-date proportion of those students worldwide exhibiting gambling pathology as assessed by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), and is the first to include estimates of sub-clinical problem gambling well as these same rates among college student-athletes. A thorough literature review and coding procedure resulted in 124 independent data estimates retrieved from 72 studies conducted between 1987 and the present, surveying 41,989 university students and student-athletes worldwide. The estimated proportion of probable pathological gamblers among students was computed at 6. 13%, with a 6. 46% rate among student-athletes. Rates of problem gambling were computed at 10. 23% and 8. 97% for students and student-athletes respectively. Statistical significance was found in the influence of the percentage of non-white students on some of these rates for both students and student-athletes alike. The implications of these results as well as recommendations for future practice in dealing with college students and disordered gambling on campus are outlined and described in detail for administrators, mental health professionals, counselor educators, faculty, university staff, and coaches. Suggestions and rationales for future avenues of research are also described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As states have moved from merely tolerating gambling to running their own games, as communities have increasingly turned to gambling for an economic boost, important questions arise. Has the new age of gambling increased the proportion of pathological or problem gamblers in the U.S. population? Where is the threshold between "social betting" and pathology? Is there a real threat to our families, communities, and the larger society? Pathological Gambling explores America's experience of gambling, examining: The diverse and frequently controversial issues surrounding the definition of pathological gambling. Its co-occurrence with disorders such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and depression. Its social characteristics and economic consequences, both good and bad, for communities. The role of video gaming, Internet gambling, and other technologies in the development of gambling problems. Treatment approaches and their effectiveness, from Gambler's Anonymous to cognitive therapy to pharmacology. This book provides the most up-to-date information available on the prevalence of pathological and problem gambling in the United States, including a look at populations that may have a particular vulnerability to gambling: women, adolescents, and minority populations. Its describes the effects of problem gambling on families, friendships, employment, finances, and propensity to crime. How do pathological gamblers perceive and misperceive randomness and chance? What are the causal pathways to pathological gambling? What do genetics, brain imaging, and other studies tell us about the biology of gambling? Is there a bit of sensation-seeking in all of us? Who needs treatment? What do we know about the effectiveness of different policies for dealing with pathological gambling? The book reviews the available facts and frames the intriguing questions yet to be answered. Pathological Gambling will be the odds-on favorite for anyone interested in gambling in America: policymakers, public officials, economics and social researchers, treatment professionals, and concerned gamblers and their families.

Book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students

Download or read book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students written by Robert Gene Thrasher and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose of the current study was to examine the gambling behavior of college students and, in particular, college student athletes. Specifically, this study examined the relationships among subjective norms, gambling attitudes, gambling motivations, locus of control, and gambling intentions on the gambling behavior of college students. The goal of this study was to assess gambling in a specific population with easy access to gambling and to evaluate the adequacy of a modified Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) for predicting gambling frequency and gambling behavior. Several studies have used the TRA to examine gambling behavior (Cummings & Corney, 1989; Moore & Ohtsuka, 1997,1999; Oh & Hsu, 2001). AN of these studies have found the TRA to be an effective instrument when examining gambling behavior. However, the researcher chose to modify the IRA in the current study by adding two moderating variables, intrinsic motivation and locus of control, to the conceptual model in order to provide a better conceptual model for future research. The results indicated the addition of the moderating variable in the IRA was appropriate. In the case of intrinsic motivation, both intrinsic motivation to know and intrinsic motivation to accomplish significantly moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions, predicting 2% of the variance. The current study found that (1) there were differences in gambling attitudes between men and women, (2) attitudes and subjective norms predicted gambling intentions and (3) motivations and locus of control moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions. These results should be useful to athletic departments and student affairs officers, who are developing strategies to deal with gambling problems on campuses. In addition, the results relative to the revised TRA should be helpful to future researchers in this area. Future research should focus on additional psychological traits such as sensation seeking, aptitude, self-esteem, impulsivity, boredom, venturesomeness, passion, chasing, coping or escape as moderating variables that may influence gambling behavior among student athletes and other students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth gambling represents a potentially serious public policy and health issue. Nevertheless, the rise in youth gambling issues and problems in the global context is not matched with a parallel increase in research on adolescent gambling. As such, there is an urgent need to conduct more studies on adolescent gambling behaviour. Recently significant advances in the knowledge of the risk factors associated with adolescent problems has emerged. This book addresses issues related to prevalence, assessment, prevention and treatment of youth gambling problems as well as concerns related to technological changes associated with youth problem gambling.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines how recent changes to collegiate athletics, allowing players to earn compensation for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) has changed the landscape of college sports generally. What was once considered rule breaking by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is now commonplace. At all levels of college athletics, student-athletes can use their earnings for their families and futures, including those whose athletic careers will conclude following graduation. NIL allows student-athletes to have more incentive to compete at the collegiate level. For athletes with prospects for a professional career, NIL provides the opportunity to stay in college longer as they make money and work toward a degree. For this thesis, Penn State University student-athletes shared their perspectives on NIL, insights that are only really known by those most affected by it. These interviews shed light on how NIL is working out in practice. Universities and athletic organizations must carefully consider the potential positives and negatives of NIL to create a fair system that supports the needs of all involved parties.

Book Design for the Changing Educational Landscape

Download or read book Design for the Changing Educational Landscape written by Andrew Harrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whole landscape of space use is undergoing a radical transformation. In the workplace a period of unprecedented change has created a mix of responses with one overriding outcome observable worldwide: the rise of distributed space. In the learning environment the social, political, economic and technological changes responsible for this shift have been further compounded by constantly developing theories of learning and teaching, and a wide acceptance of the importance of learning as the core of the community, resulting in the blending of all aspects of learning into one seamless experience. This book attempts to look at all the forces driving the provision and pedagogic performance of the many spaces, real and virtual, that now accommodate the experience of learning and provide pointers towards the creation and design of learning-centred communities. Part 1 looks at the entire learning universe as it now stands, tracks the way in which its constituent parts came to occupy their role, assesses how they have responded to a complex of drivers and gauges their success in dealing with renewed pressures to perform. It shows that what is required is innovation within the spaces and integration between them. Part 2 finds many examples of innovation in evidence across the world – in schools, the higher and further education campus and in business and cultural spaces – but an almost total absence of integration. Part 3 offers a model that redefines the learning landscape in terms of learning outcomes, mapping spatial requirements and activities into a detailed mechanism that will achieve the best outcome at the most appropriate scale. By encouraging stakeholders to creating an events-based rather than space-based identity, the book hopes to point the way to a fully-integrated learning landscape: a learning community.
