Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finland and the Finns The present book is written from the stand point of one who has made his home in Finland, and the writer hopes that what he may have lost in the freshness of first impressions may prove to be more than counterbalanced by increased intimacy with the land and people described. As Finland, in spite of the excellent books that have been written by thoughtful and observant travellers, is still but little known, it has seemed best to concentrate attention on the leading features of Finnish life, and not to go too much into details which, in the absence of a conception of the country as a whole, might easily prove wearisome or confusing. The general ignorance of Finland has also made a small amount of repetition unavoidable, as it has been necessary to summarize in the Introduction matters which are treated at greater length in subsequent chapters. It may be as well to point out that the term "Finn" is sometimes used to denote any citizen of Finland, and sometimes, in a narrower sense, to distinguish the Finnish-speaking from the Swedish-speaking population of the country. Similarly "Swede" sometimes signifies an inhabitant of Sweden, and sometimes is used to distinguish the Swedish-speaking from the Finnish-speaking population of Finland. Book Representations of Finnishness in Sweden

Download or read book Representations of Finnishness in Sweden written by Lotta Weckström and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half a million Swedes - one in twenty - is of Finnish descent. This book explores Finnishness, multilingualism and identities of young people with Finnish background in Sweden. What does it mean to grow up in a Finnish family in Sweden? Who are "real Finns" and what does it take to be(come) one? Is a shared minority language essential for the survival of the minority, or can a minority culture stay viable without it? What is Finnishness and who, in the end, can define ethnicity? How to make sense of, and how to present interviews that are rich with imitations of accents, jokes and laughter? Representations of Finnishness is Sweden is an ethnographic interview study in the domain of applied language studies. This book is aimed at readers interested in sociolinguistics, linguistic ethnography, and the study of identities. Interviewees' voices take a central position in this book and interview excerpts are used not only as illustrations, but also serve as starting points for discussing broader theoretical concepts. The author, Dr. Lotta Weckström, grew up bilingual - Finnish and Swedish - in Finland. She studied linguistics and migration studies in Germany and the Netherlands, and in this longitudinal study encompasses her expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six articles in Changing scenes represent the ongoing reassessment of fin de siècle literature in Finnish research. The period was seen in earlier research as something of a national renaissance or golden age and interpreted in the light of its national symbols and meanings. Only recently has more attention been paid to its international dimensions and its role in the modernisation of Finnish culture. In particular the spotlight has been trained on the reflection in Finnish literature of manifestations of the degeneration thinking so common in Europe at that time. Research has also picked out works and writers that featured less in earlier studies. One modernist Finnish poet, Neustadt Prize-winning Paavo Haavikko, is also examined in an article representing the latest Finnish research in this field.

Book The Love Story of the Century

Download or read book The Love Story of the Century written by Märta Tikkanen and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed an immediate classic of Finnish literature on its publication in 1978 and an international bestseller that has been translated into 19 languages, Märta Tikkanen’s verse novel is a haunting, profoundly evocative portrait of one woman’s fraught relationship with her alcoholic husband, inspired by the author's own experience. In language that is as delicate as it is fierce, Tikkanen explores the depths of fear and violence that often accompany addiction and the struggle to reconcile that pain with the deep love and strength necessary to hold a family together through it all. As much a story of resilience as it is suffering, The Love Story of the Century is a bittersweet account of the complexities of addiction, the power of creativity, and the redemption of love.
