Book The Routledge Handbook of Financial Geography

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Financial Geography written by Janelle Knox-Hayes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a comprehensive and up to date work of reference that offers a survey of the state of financial geography. With Brexit, a global recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as new financial technology threatening and promising to revolutionize finance, the map of the financial world is in a state of transformation, with major implications for development. With these developments in the background, this handbook builds on this unprecedented momentum and responds to these epochal challenges, offering a comprehensive guide to financial geography. Financial geography is concerned with the study of money and finance in space and time, and their impacts on economy, society and nature. The book consists of 29 chapters organized in six sections: theoretical perspectives on financial geography, financial assets and markets, investors, intermediation, regulation and governance, and finance, development and the environment. Each chapter provides a balanced overview of current knowledge, identifying issues and discussing relevant debates. Written in an analytical and engaging style by authors based on six continents from a wide range of disciplines, the work also offers reflections on where the research agenda is likely to advance in the future. The book’s key audience will primarily be students and researchers in geography, urban studies, global studies and planning, more or less familiar with financial geography, who seek access to a state-of-the art survey of this area. It will also be useful for students and researchers in other disciplines, such as finance and economics, history, sociology, anthropology, politics, business studies, environmental studies and other social sciences, who seek convenient access to financial geography as a new and relatively unfamiliar area. Finally, it will be a valuable resource for practitioners in the public and private sector, including business consultants and policy-makers, who look for alternative approaches to understanding money and finance.

Book Geofinance between Political and Financial Geographies

Download or read book Geofinance between Political and Financial Geographies written by Silvia Grandi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the boundaries between political and financial geographies, focusing on the linkages between the changing strategies, policies and institutions of the state. It also investigates banks and other financial institutions affected by both state policies and a globalizing financial system, and the financial resources available to firms as well as households. In so doing, the book highlights how an empirical focus on the semi-periphery of the financial system may generate new perspectives on the entanglement between (geo) politics and finance.

Book The Geography of Money

Download or read book The Geography of Money written by Benjamin J. Cohen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional assumption holds that the territory of money coincides precisely with the political frontiers of each nation state: France has the franc, the United Kingdom has the pound, the United States has the dollar. But the disparity between that simple mental landscape and the actual organization of currency spaces has grown in recent years, as territorial boundaries of individual states limit currency circulation less and less. Many currencies are used outside their "home" country for transactions either between nations or within foreign states. In this book, Benjamin J. Cohen asks what this new geography of money reveals about financial and political power. Cohen shows how recent changes in the geography of money challenge state sovereignty. He examines the role of money and the scope of cross-border currency competition in today's world. Drawing on new work in geography and network theory to explain the new spatial organization of monetary relations, Cohen suggests that international relations, political as well as economic, are being dramatically reshaped by the increasing interpenetration of national monetary spaces. This process, he explains, generates tensions and insecurities as well as opportunities for cooperation.

Book The Geography of Finance

Download or read book The Geography of Finance written by David J. Porteous and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text shows how theoretical innovations in areas such as endogenous intermediation, together with recent econometric techniques such as co-integration and switching models, can usefully be applied to some of the important questions in the field, such as: what causes spatial credit rationing (or red-lining)? What effects do nationwide branch-banking systems and decentralized banking systems have? What causes financial centres to develop and their prominence to change over time? The banking systems and financial centres of Canada and Australia are chosen for empirical work, for which a rich set of data, including a new index measure of the importance of a financial centre, are developed.

Book Banking and Financial Markets

Download or read book Banking and Financial Markets written by Andrada Bilan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional role of a bank was to transfer funds from savers to investors, engaging in maturity transformation, screening for borrower risk and monitoring for borrower effort in doing so. A typical loan contract was set up along six simple dimensions: the amount, the interest rate, the expected credit risk (determining both the probability of default for the loan and the expected loss given default), the required collateral, the currency, and the lending technology. However, the modern banking industry today has a broad scope, offering a range of sophisticated financial products, a wider geography -- including exposure to countries with various currencies, regulation and monetary policy regimes -- and an increased reliance on financial innovation and technology. These new bank business models have had repercussions on the loan contract. In particular, the main components and risks of a loan contract can now be hedged on the market, by means of interest rate swaps, foreign exchange transactions, credit default swaps and securitization. Securitized loans can often be pledged as collateral, thus facilitating new lending. And the lending technology is evolving from one-to-one meetings between a loan officer and a borrower, at a bank branch, towards potentially disruptive technologies such as peer-to-peer lending, crowd funding or digital wallet services. This book studies the interaction between traditional and modern banking and the economic benefits and costs of this new financial ecosystem, by relying on recent empirical research in banking and finance and exploring the effects of increased financial sophistication on a particular dimension of the loan contract.

Book Advances in Commercial Geography

Download or read book Advances in Commercial Geography written by Carlos Garrocho and published by El Colegio Mexiquense. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
