Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard University During the Last Twenty-Five Years: 1889-1914 To record the history and progress of Harvard University even for a period of twenty-five years is no light task. Much has happened at Harvard since we graduated a quarter-century ago. It has been a period of growth and expansion; the following pages are an attempt to set forth the story of the changes that have taken place. No one can realize more keenly than the writer its shortcomings; but to tell the full tale of the growth of Harvard since 1889 in the space allotted me by our Secretary was impossible. Much that was of interest and of real significance I have had to omit altogether and much more to touch all too briefly. And at the beginning let me state that this sketch would not have been undertaken and could not have been carried even to a reasonable degree of completeness had I not had the kind permission of Mr. William C. Lane, Librarian of Harvard College, to make free use of the record he prepared in 1906 for the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Report of the Class of 1881. Not only has his account served as a model for the present paper, but from it verbatim quotations have been freely made. To him the thanks of the Class are due. Statistics of Growth. The growth of the University in size is what strikes one first. Here is a comparison of the figures for our senior year and the current year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Class of 1889 Harvard College: Thirtieth Anniversary, 1889-1919; Eighth Report of the Class Secretary, June, 1919 It is to be noted that the facts stated in these Class lives are only those which have occurred since June, 1914; for all facts as to the previous life of each man, reference should be made to the Twenty Fifth Anniversary Report. I have, after urgent persuasion, secured from Bentley, Cabot, Davenport, Gerstle, Lydig, Moore, Morse, Perry, Proc tor, Ropes, H. M. Sears, Stone and W. H. Warren, more full accounts of their experiences in military, surgical, Red Cross, and other official work in the Great War, than they were otherwise planning to send to me. These accounts, being of historical value, will, I believe, alone make this Class Report worth while. Since it has been determined to hold a less elaborate (and wifeless) celebration this year, I have included in this Report a full account of the Twenty Fifth Anniversary, in order to make permanent the memories of that really wonderful oc casion. Finally, I take this opportunity of saying to all my Class mates (especially to those who were lucky enough not to be obliged to listen to my utterly inadequate speech of thanks, five years ago) how deeply I appreciated and always will appreciate the compliment bestowed upon me by them, on June 16, 1914, in the shape of the superb silver bowl, platter and ladle - the beauty and utility of which I so greatly enjoy, but the inscription on which I even more highly prize. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, the Class of 1876: Seventh Report of the Secretary, Covering the Class History for Twenty-Five Years to 1901 Entering only three years after the accession of President Eliot, we found his energy at work building a new superstructure upon the old foundation. During Freshman year we were per mitted to pursue our required studies with our minds unfretted by the necessity of choosing for ourselves, but the three succeeding years com pelled us to get out of leading strings. We were given a broad choice of elective studies; our at tendance at our courses was made voluntary. As is well known, this liberal system has, with cer tain wise regulations, been made still more lib eral, and its principles have, through the changes in the entrance requirements, been extended into the secondary schools. The general principle has been adopted by the College that a Bachelor's de gree is necessary for admission to all professional courses of study. This makes it important that the conditions for admission to the College or Scientific School shall be liberally conceived. Mr. W. C. Lane, in the Report of the Class of says: The requirements of 1881 al low the substitution in the place of Greek of a considerable amount of scientific study, including some advanced mathematics, but do not al low the substitution of any modern language or of history. Japanese students may substitute an examination in the Japanese language and litera ture for English, in the Chinese language and literature for elementary Greek, and in English for elementary Latin; while students and grad nates of the Imperial University of Japan might be admitted without examination. Our young Roman of the East, the Japanese, as well as his American fellow-student, can, if he chooses, do the work required for a degree in three years. Some of the old leisure classes took five or six years in their pursuit of an ever evading degree. It is even planned to have two Commencements a year. Since the prohibition of rum punch, two such days may safely be per mitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
