Book Irish Traction in Colour

Download or read book Irish Traction in Colour written by Derek Huntriss and published by Ian Allen Pub. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in Great Britain, the period from the mid-1950s onwards saw considerable changes to the railways of Ireland with contraction seeing, for example, the demise of the final narrow gauge lines and the complexities of the division of the Ireland leading to the closure of the bulk of the erstwhile GNR(I) network. It was also a period that witnessed the final elimination of main line steam in both the Republic and Northern Ireland, although the latter retained steam for longer than the rest of the United Kingdom, as diesel traction was introduced. Initially many of the new locomotives and diesel-units delivered for use on Ireland's network were built in Britain but increasingly overseas manufacturers, most notably General Motors, came to dominate, particularly with CIE. In this title Derek Huntriss reflects the changes in Irish traction between the mid-1950s and the early 1980s, encompassing the last steam operations and the career of the first generation of Irish diesel locomotives. During these years Ireland acted as a magnet for many of the leading railway photographers from Britain and the book draws upon these collections to provide images covering railways in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.

Book excerpt: The London Midland & Scottish Railway was the largest of the Big Four railway companies to emerge from the 1923 grouping. It was the only one to operate in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as having two short stretches of line in the Irish Republic. It was also the world's largest railway shipping operator and owned the greatest number of railway hotels. Mainly a freight railway, it still boasted the best carriages, and the work of chief engineer Sir William Stanier influenced the first locomotive and carriage designs for the nationalised British railways. Packed with facts and figures as well as historical narrative, this extensively illustrated book is a superb reference source that will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts.

Book The Architecture and Legacy of British Railway Buildings

Download or read book The Architecture and Legacy of British Railway Buildings written by Robert Thornton and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railway buildings have always had a fascinating character all of their own, despite many no longer being in operational railway service. This book tells the story of how these buildings evolved alongside the development of the railway in Great Britain and examines how architects over the years have responded to the operational, social and cultural influences that define their work. Written for those with a keen interest in architecture and the railway, as well as those new to the subject, The Architecture and Legacy of British Railway Buildings provides an unique insight into the production of railway architecture, both in the context of railway management and the significant periods of ownership, and the swings in national mood for railway-based transportation. As well as tracing its history, the authors take time to consider the legacy these buildings have left behind and the impact of heritage on a continually forward-looking industry. Topics covered include: the context of railway architecture today; the history of how it came into existence; the evolution of different railway building types; the unique aspects of railway building design, and finally, the key railway development periods and their architectural influences.
