Book excerpt: When various members of the Rosanada Archdiocesan Chancery are brutally murdered, Cristian Forte, homicide detective for the Rosanada Police Department, is determined to find the killer. Disillusioned with seminary life and the scandals in the Church, Forte dropped out of the seminary and became a detective instead of a priest, but still burns with a deep desire for truth, justice, and a holy Church. His quest to find the killer involves him in the lives of many in the contemporary Church who have a lot to hide and are lost in evils of their own making. As he strives to make sense of the Church today, he gradually strips away the layers of deception that hide the killer until the exciting conclusion when all is laid bare and the truth is told. About the Author: Son of an American mother and a Spanish father, Josue Raul Conte, a native of Andorra, a principality in the Pyrenees, was born in 1969. After his early education with the Jesuits, he enrolled at the Opus Dei University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, where he received his doctorate in medieval philosophy and literature. During his years at the university, he became a member of the Neo-catechumenal Way, but later was very disillusioned with the stringent constraints of ultraconservative Catholicism and adopted a more moderate approach to the faith and dropped out of the Way. Having taught at various colleges and universities, he is now a freelance journalist, living in San Francisco with his second wife Alicia and Ivan, their Russian wolfhound. He is also the author of The Stones Cry Out and Rosanada Requiem that continue the story that began and complete the Rosanada Trilogy. For more information visit www.contebooks.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable collection explores the many faces of murder, and its cultural presences, across the Italian peninsula between 1350 and 1650. These shape the content in different ways: the faces of homicide range from the ordinary to the sensational, from the professional to the accidental, from the domestic to the public; while the cultural presence of homicide is revealed through new studies of sculpture, paintings, and popular literature. Dealing with a range of murders, and informed by the latest criminological research on homicide, it brings together new research by an international team of specialists on a broad range of themes: different kinds of killers (by gender, occupation, and situation); different kinds of victim (by ethnicity, gender, and status); and different kinds of evidence (legal, judicial, literary, and pictorial). It will be an indispensable resource for students of Renaissance Italy, late medieval/early modern crime and violence, and homicide studies.

But within forty-eight hours the nation is gripped by a fear that leaves this comparatively small crime in the dark. Three passenger planes are shot out of the sky. Everywhere–in law enforcement, in the media, and in the most secret realms of government–men and women scramble to find out who shot hand-held missiles at the planes, and why. It is a search that reaches from Moscow to the Pacific Northwest, putting some people’s lives in jeopardy and turning others lives inside out. But no one can guess the truth: that the epicenter of the terrorist outbreak is Washington D.C. . . . and a dead man behind a park bench in a place called Foggy Bottom.

Book The Legs Murder Scandal

  • Author : Hunter Cole
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2010-12-01
  • ISBN : 1496801202
  • Pages : 589 pages

Download or read book The Legs Murder Scandal written by Hunter Cole and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Laurel, Mississippi, in 1935, one daughter of a wealthy and troubled family stood accused of murdering her mother. On her testimony, authorities suspected an equally prominent and well-to-do businessman, her reputed lover, of assisting. Ouida Keeton apparently shot her mother, chopped her up, and disposed of most of her body parts down the toilet and in the fireplace, burning all but the pelvic region, the thighs, and the legs. Attempting to dispose of these remains on a narrow, one-lane, isolated road, Ouida left a trail of evidence that ended in her arrest. People had seen her driving to the road. Within hours, a hunter and his dogs found the cloth in which she had wrapped her mother’s legs. Touted as the most sensational crime in Mississippi history at the time, the Legs Murder of 1935 is almost entirely forgotten today. The controversial outcome, decided by an unsophisticated jury, has been left muddled by ambiguity. With The Legs Murder Scandal, Hunter Cole presents an intricately detailed description of the separate trials of Ouida Keeton and W. M. Carter. Having researched trial transcripts, courthouse records, medical files, and vast newspaper coverage, the author reveals new facts previously distorted by hearsay, hushed reports, and misinformation. Cole pursues many unanswered questions such as what, really, did Ouida Keeton do with the rest of her mother? The Legs Murder Scandal attempts to provide the reader with clarity in this story, which is outlandish, harrowing, and intriguing, all at once.
