  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Latino Spin written by Arlene M. Dávila and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2010 Distinguished Book Award in Latino Studies from the Latin American Studies Association Illegal immigrant, tax burden, job stealer. Patriot, family oriented, hard worker, model consumer. Ever since Latinos became the largest minority in the U.S. they have been caught between these wildly contrasting characterizations leaving us to wonder: Are Latinos friend or foe? Latino Spin cuts through the spin about Latinos' supposed values, political attitudes, and impact on U.S. national identity to ask what these caricatures suggest about Latinos' shifting place in the popular and political imaginary. Noted scholar Arlene Dávila illustrates the growing consensus among pundits, advocates, and scholars that Latinos are not a social liability, that they are moving up and contributing, and that, in fact, they are more American than "the Americans." But what is at stake in such a sanitized and marketable representation of Latinidad? Dávila follows the spin through the realm of politics, think tanks, Latino museums, and urban planning to uncover whether they effectively challenge the growing fear over Latinos' supposedly dreadful effect on the "integrity" of U.S. national identity. What may be some of the intended or unintended consequences of these more marketable representations in regard to current debates over immigration? With particular attention to what these representations reveal about the place and role of Latinos in the contemporary politics of race, Latino Spin highlights the realities they skew and the polarization they effect between Latinos and other minorities, and among Latinos themselves along the lines of citizenship and class. Finally, by considering Latinos in all their diversity, including their increasing financial and geographic disparities, Dávila can present alternative and more empowering representations of Latinidad to help attain true political equity and intraracial coalitions.

Book Everyday Editing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Anderson
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-10-10
  • ISBN : 1003843697
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Everyday Editing written by Jeff Anderson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editing is often seen as one item on a list of steps in the writing process, usually put somewhere near the end, and often completely crowded out of writer' s workshop. Too many times daily editing lessons happen in a vacuum, with no relationship to what students are writing. In Everyday Editing , Jeff Anderson asks teachers to reflect on what sort of message this approach sends to students. Does it tell them that editing and revision are meaningful parts of the writing process, or just a hunt for errors with a 50/50 chance of getting it right, comma or no comma? Instead of rehearsing errors and drilling students on what' s wrong with a sentence, Jeff invites students to look carefully at their writing along with mentor texts, and to think about how punctuation, grammar, and style can be best used to hone and communicate meaning. Written in Jeff' s characteristically witty style, this refreshing and practical guide offers an overview of his approach to editing within the writing workshop as well as ten detailed sets of lessons covering everything from apostrophes to serial commas. These lessons can be used throughout the year to replace Daily Oral Language or error-based editing strategies with a more effective method for improving student writing.

Book Rome Convention Rome I Regulation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexander J. Belohlávek
  • Publisher : Juris Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 1578233224
  • Pages : 1636 pages

Download or read book Rome Convention Rome I Regulation written by Alexander J. Belohlávek and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 1636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As of 17 December 2010, the Rome I Regulation (EU Regulation 593/2008) on the law applicable to contractual obligations is directly applicable in all EU Member States with the exception of Denmark. The Rome I Regulation replaces the Rome Convention of 1980 in the EU Member States and will apply to all contracts concluded as of 17 December 2010. However, and herein lies the utility and great importance of this work, the Rome Convention and the Rome I Regulation will be applied in parallel for a significant time to come (the author himself anticipates a ten-to-fifteen year period); in the latter case to contracts made after 17 December, 2010. This is why this commentary takes into account both sources of law, in their mutual interaction and broader context. The comprehensiveness of the Rome Convention / Rome I Regulation is clearly apparent, but one of the great achievements of the author is his amassing of over 1,800 judicial decisions, most of which are furnished with a detailed commentary; where these decisions apply national laws, the latter are cited both in the original and in translation. For a number of rulings, the commentary include not only a case summary of the facts and an analysis of the conclusions drawn by the court, but also takes them as models to hypothesize what conclusions would be reached if the Rome I Regulation were to be applied.

The 13 full papers and 7 short papers presented in this book together with 4 tutorial papers and 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 39 submissions. The RV conference is concerned with all aspects of novel lightweight formal methods to monitor, analyze, and guide the runtime behavior of software and hardware systems. Runtime verification techniques are crucial for system correctness, reliability, and robustness; they provide an additional level of rigor and effectiveness compared to conventional testing and are generally more practical than exhaustive formal verification.
