Book The Challenges of a King

Download or read book The Challenges of a King written by K. M. Ashman and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Excellent' Stewart Binns, author of the Making of England series The fight for England began long before 1066... AD 1045. Godwin of Wessex, one of the most powerful earls in the country, prepares for the marriage of his daughter to King Edward of England. The mood is jubilant, his family’s relationship with the Crown secured through matrimony. But one man seeks to undermine him at every opportunity. French-born Bishop of London, Robert of Jumièges, has the ear of the king. As a trusted adviser, his position is one of power and privilege, and he wields it to gain ever-greater influence over the English Crown for his kinsmen in Normandy, at Godwin’s expense. As the bishop’s control increases, the king’s relationship with the House of Godwin frays until, eventually, it breaks down completely. With civil war looming, Godwin fights to pull England back from the brink. But with the king under Norman influence, it could be too little, too late. The Challenges of a King is the first book in a thrilling new series from K. M. Ashman exploring the politics, promises and intrigue that led three men to contest the throne in 1066, and to the final successful invasion of England. Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell. Praise for The Challenges of a King 'The Challenges of a King is an excellent read. The historical accuracy tied to a fictional account is highly commendable and the narrative moves along at a gripping pace. The dialogue is sharp and authentic and the story is told clearly and concisely. I highly recommend the book to anyone who loves historical fiction' Stewart Binns, author of the Making of England series

Book excerpt: In 2018, journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi regime operatives, shocking the international community and tarnishing the reputation of Muhammad bin Salman, the kingdom's young, reformist crown prince. Domestically, bin Salman's reforms have proven divisive, and his adoption of populist nationalism and fierce repression of diverse critical voices--religious scholars, feminists and dissident youth--have failed to silence a vibrant and well-connected Saudi society. Madawi Al-Rasheed lays bare the world of repression behind the crown prince's reforms. She dissects the Saudi regime's propaganda and progressive new image, while also dismissing Orientalist views that despotism is the only pathway to stable governance in the Middle East. Charting old and new challenges to the fragile Saudi nation from the kingdom's very inception, this blistering book exposes the dangerous contradictions at the heart of the Son King's Saudi Arabia.

Book The Making of a King

    Book Details:
  • Author : Benjamin Osei Kuffour Jnr

Download or read book The Making of a King written by Benjamin Osei Kuffour Jnr and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the making of a king: the making of a king is a prerequisite to office politics. It places high premium on the processes we must go through before we get to the throne-where god wants to elevate us to. Despite the challenges in life especially the goliath challenge, god enables us to surmount all those insurmountable hurdles during our journey with him. Information on marriage is not a bed of roses: marriage is a sacred institution made by god but we humans use marriage contrary to how god designed it. Some ladies marry to please friends, prove a point to their parents, still others, marry because everybody is marrying. Some marry because they are frustrated with their growing. God created marriage for three main reasons: sharing, support and respect/honor. Information on turning failure into success: success is not something you do once but something you do repeatedly. Success is a culmination of hard work, preparation, perseverance, endurance, vision and an unremitting devotion to the things you wanna see happen. Information on things that destroy us: there are a lot of things we do that destroy us and I focused on three-bitterness, bad friends and greed. In life, never be bitter over past hurts and disappointment because it will poison every good thing that god has planted in you. Evil company corrupts good habits so do not joke with it. Never be greedy over anything in life because you will not be buried with your earthly possessions. Nothing lasts forever except god and his word.

Book The Work of Jacques Le Goff and the Challenges of Medieval History

Download or read book The Work of Jacques Le Goff and the Challenges of Medieval History written by Miri Rubin and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on medieval history inspired by, and engaging with, the work of Jacques Le Goff. The essays in this volume arise from the proceedings of a conference held in 1994 to celebrate the life and work of the eminent French medievalist Jacques Le Goff. Set within thematic sections -popular religion and heresy, the body, royalty andits mystique, intellectuals in medieval society, and others -many of the challenges raised by Le Goff are reassessed and reapproached. There is an explicit historiographical focus in a section on the reception and influence of Le Goff, with particular reference to the Annales school of history with which he is strongly identified; the volume also indicates the problems which animate current research in medieval studies, especially in certain areas of social and cultural history. MIRI RUBIN is Professor of History, Queen Mary, University of London. Contributors: ALEXANDER MURRAY, PETER BILLER, ANDRÉ VAUCHEZ, R.I. MOORE, OTTO GERHARD OEXLE, LESTER K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has strolled through the halls of a museum knows that portraits occupy a central place in the history of art. But did portraits, as such, exist in the medieval era? Stephen Perkinson's "The likeness of the king" challenges the canonical account of the invention of modern portrait practices, offering a case against the tendency of recent scholarship to identify likenesses of historical personages as "the first modern portraits". Focusing on the Valois court of France, he argues that local practice prompted shifts in the late medieval understanding of how images could represent individuals and prompted artists and patrons to deploy likeness in a variety of ways.

Book The Challenge Culture

Download or read book The Challenge Culture written by Nigel Travis and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The executive chairman and former CEO of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins reflects on the unique, results-oriented discipline he's developed over decades of leadership, which provides a blueprint for any organization to achieve prosperity. We live in an era in which successful organizations can fail in a flash. But they can cope with change and thrive by creating a culture that supports positive pushback: questioning everything without disrespecting anyone. Nigel Travis has forty years of experience as a leader in large and successful organizations, as well as those facing existential crisis-such as Blockbuster as it dawdled in the face of the Netflix challenge. In his ten years as CEO and chairman of Dunkin' Brands, Travis fine-tuned his ideas about the challenge culture and perfected the practices required to build it. He argues that the best way for organizations to succeed in today's environment is to embrace challenge and encourage pushback. Everyone-from the new recruit to the senior leader-must be given the freedom to speak up and question the status quo, must learn how to talk in a civil way about difficult issues, and should be encouraged to debate strategies and tactics-although always in the spirit of shared purpose. How else will new ideas emerge? How else can organizations steadily improve? Through colorful storytelling, with many examples from his own career-including his leadership in turning around the fear-ridden culture of the London-based Leyton Orient Football Club, of which he is part owner-Travis shows how to establish a culture that welcomes challenge, achieves exceptional results, and ensures a prosperous future.
