Book The 1934 St Louis Cardinals

Download or read book The 1934 St Louis Cardinals written by Edited by Charles F. Faber and published by SABR, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals were one of the most colorful crews ever to play the National Pastime. Sportswriters delighted in assigning nicknames to the players, based on their real or imagined qualities. What a cast of characters it was! None was more picturesque than Pepper Martin, the “Wild Horse of the Osage,” who ran the bases with reckless abandon, led his teammates in off thefield hijinks, and organized a hillbilly band called the Mississippi Mudcats. He was quite a baseball player, the star of the 1931 World Series and a significant contributor to the 1934 championship. The harmonica player for the Mudcats was the irrepressible Dizzy Dean. Full of braggadocio, Dean delivered on his boasts by winning 30 games in 1934, the last National League hurler to achieve that feat. Dizzy and his brother Paul accounted for all of the Cardinal victories in the 1934 World Series. Some writers tried to pin the moniker Daffy on Paul, but that name didn’t fit the younger and much quieter brother. The club’s hitters were led by the New Jersey strong boy, Joe “Ducky” Medwick, who hated the nickname, preferring to be called “Muscles.” Presiding over this aggregation was the “Fordham Flash,” Frankie Frisch. Rounding out the club were worthies bearing such nicknames as Ripper, “Leo the Lip,” Spud, Kiddo, Pop, Dazzy, Ol’ Stubblebeard, Wild Bill, Buster, Chick, Red, and Tex. Some of these were aging stars, past their prime, and others were youngsters, on their way up. Together they comprised a championship ball club. “The Gas House Gang was the greatest baseball club I ever saw. They thought they could beat any ballclub and they just about could too. When they got on that ballfield, they played baseball, and they played it to the hilt too. When they slid, they slid hard. There was no good fellowship between them and the opposition. They were just good, tough ballplayers.” — Cardinals infielder Burgess Whitehead on "When It Was A Game," HBO Sports, 1991

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: St. Louis is one of the most architecturally impressive cities in the United States, with a heritage of innovative design stretching back to the early 1800s. This is reflected in the architecture of the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. More than just about any city in America, St. Louis embraced the imposing forms and lush ornamentation of the Beaux Arts tradition. Indeed, one can make the argument that only Washington, D.C. in the United States has a more impressive collection of classically inspired structures. American City: St. Louis Architecture is the first large-format book on the city's architecture since the 1920s, and includes over 100 new color photographs and text for 50 of the city's most important structures. These range from such 19th Century masterpieces as Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building, Alfred Mullet's Old Post Office and Theodore Link's Union Station, to Eero Saarinen's Gateway Arch, Tadao Andao's Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts Building and Maya Lin's recently completed Ellen Clark Hope Plaza.

This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transactions of the Academy of Science of Saint Louis, Vol. 5: 1886-'91 The difference between the two belt-pulls, or the load on the brake, is represented by w, r being the brake-arm, or radius of the driving-wheel. If the belt-pulls are F' and fi, then F F to. It is supposed also that the mean effective pres sure required to drive the engine when w an: a is constant for all speeds. In an engine with balanced valves and where the amount of lubrication used increases with the speed, this assumption may be tolerated for a general treatment of the case, although the peculiarities of engines will doubtless cause them to depart from this assumption in a more or less irregular way. Engines are usually built for definite speeds, and often behave poorly when run at widely different speeds from those for which they were designed. For these reasons, some portions of this treatment cannot lay claim to very great precision. It will serve mainly to present the general conditions of the problem, and may serve as a basis for investigating the peculiarities of individual engines. Book The 1922 St Louis Browns

Download or read book The 1922 St Louis Browns written by Roger A. Godin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes life isn't fair: Most of the finishes in the 52-year history of the franchise (1901-1953) were in the depths of the second division. The one exception was 1922, a year in which the Browns led the league in batting, slugging, runs, triples, stolen bases, walks, strikeouts, saves and earned run average--and still came in second. This book meticulously recreates that year from spring training to season's end, when they fought the Yankees down to the wire, losing by one game on the next to the last day.

Book Pursuing Excellence for the Glory of God

Download or read book Pursuing Excellence for the Glory of God written by Keith A. Currivean and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is education? How and why do educators do what we do? And, in what way can and ought education be distinctively Christian? These are a few of the probing questions for which this book seeks answers. Among other contributions, Currivean's book explores a biblical philosophy of Christian education with unprecedented breadth and depth. To accomplish this objective, it considers what education is (chapter 1), what philosophy of education is (chapter 2), and what the ultimate goal of education is (chapter 3). Additionally, this book provides a never-before, Christian overview of twelve philosophies of education (chapters 4-15). Each of those chapters provides an introduction of a particular philosophy of education and some of that philosophy's exemplars. Each of those chapters also contributes a constructive, Christian critique. Chapter 16 highlights a biblical philosophy of Christian education--featuring some people, some principles, and some priorities for a biblical philosophy of Christian education, viz. pursuing excellence for the glory of God.

Book Agriculture in Antebellum St Louis

Download or read book Agriculture in Antebellum St Louis written by Pamela K. Sanfilippo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture in Antebellum St. Louis: A Special History Study This special history study examines that perception by exploring the prevailing agricultural conditions both at White Haven and in St. Louis County during the antebellum period between 1840 and 1860. Although Grant faced numerous challenges while he farmed his father-in-law's estate, his situation did not differ greatly from that experienced by many other farmers. Unless we choose to identify each of them as failures and unsuited to their positions, the perception of Grant as a failure during these years needs to change. The Grants' experiences at White Haven can be better understood when placed within the context of the wider St. Louis community. General comments about the city during the 18405 and 18505 are provided as background for the discussion of farm life during the antebellum period in St. Louis County. The Grants and the Dents frequently interacted with residents, merchants and others in the city, and would have observed and participated in the many activities and events that transformed St. Louis from a frontier town to a busy metropolis during this period. Book The Broken Heart of America

Download or read book The Broken Heart of America written by Walter Johnson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing portrait of the racial dynamics that lie inescapably at the heart of our nation, told through the turbulent history of the city of St. Louis. From Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to the 2014 uprising in Ferguson, American history has been made in St. Louis. And as Walter Johnson shows in this searing book, the city exemplifies how imperialism, racism, and capitalism have persistently entwined to corrupt the nation's past. St. Louis was a staging post for Indian removal and imperial expansion, and its wealth grew on the backs of its poor black residents, from slavery through redlining and urban renewal. But it was once also America's most radical city, home to anti-capitalist immigrants, the Civil War's first general emancipation, and the nation's first general strike—a legacy of resistance that endures. A blistering history of a city's rise and decline, The Broken Heart of America will forever change how we think about the United States.
