  • ISBN : 9077596046
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Militant Democracy written by András Sajó and published by Eleven International Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of contributions by leading scholars on theoretical and contemporary problems of militant democracy. The term 'militant democracy' was first coined in 1937. In a militant democracy preventive measures are aimed, at least in practice, at restricting people who would openly contest and challenge democratic institutions and fundamental preconditions of democracy like secularism - even though such persons act within the existing limits of, and rely on the rights offered by, democracy. In the shadow of the current wars on terrorism, which can also involve rights restrictions, the overlapping though distinct problem of militant democracy seems to be lost, notwithstanding its importance for emerging and established democracies. This volume will be of particular significance outside the German-speaking world, since the bulk of the relevant literature on militant democracy is in the German language. The book is of interest to academics in the field of law, political studies and constitutionalism.

Book Deconstructing Self Determination in International Law

Download or read book Deconstructing Self Determination in International Law written by Przemysław Tacik and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right of peoples to self-determination seems well-settled and covered extensively in the scholarly record. Yet old Trotsky’s question – of whom is this right and to what? – haunts the self-determination literature. Somehow almost every work on it begins with an expression of puzzlement. This right turns out to be elusive, underdefined in its scope and content, paradoxical in almost every aspect. This book mobilises all powers of critical legal theory and modern philosophy to take the bull by its horns. Instead of ironing out the paradoxes, it aims to finally give them a proper explanation based on the concept of exception.

Book Arab and Jewish Immigrants in Latin America

Download or read book Arab and Jewish Immigrants in Latin America written by Ignacio Klich and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses various aspects of Arab and Jewish immigration and acculturation in Latin America. The experiences in the region of these two groups have never been the subject of joint and comprehensive scrutiny. The volume examines how the Latin American elites who were keen to change their countries' ethnic mix felt threatened by the arrival of Arabs and Jews. Their arrival was largely unexpected, and in some cases frankly undesired and practically banned. br br Negotiating national identity was never easy, and many of this volume's multidisciplinary cast of authors examine discrimination and prejudice as a component of Arab and Jewish life in the region. These cultural, economic and political (public) negotiations left neither side unchanged: while Latin American society and post-migratory immigrant identities have been in a constant state of flux, the elite's desired homogenization of national or cultural identity has been precluded to this day.

Book World on Fire

Download or read book World on Fire written by Amy Chua and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2004-01-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reigning consensus holds that the combination of free markets and democracy would transform the third world and sweep away the ethnic hatred and religious zealotry associated with underdevelopment. In this revelatory investigation of the true impact of globalization, Yale Law School professor Amy Chua explains why many developing countries are in fact consumed by ethnic violence after adopting free market democracy. Chua shows how in non-Western countries around the globe, free markets have concentrated starkly disproportionate wealth in the hands of a resented ethnic minority. These “market-dominant minorities” – Chinese in Southeast Asia, Croatians in the former Yugoslavia, whites in Latin America and South Africa, Indians in East Africa, Lebanese in West Africa, Jews in post-communist Russia – become objects of violent hatred. At the same time, democracy empowers the impoverished majority, unleashing ethnic demagoguery, confiscation, and sometimes genocidal revenge. She also argues that the United States has become the world’s most visible market-dominant minority, a fact that helps explain the rising tide of anti-Americanism around the world. Chua is a friend of globalization, but she urges us to find ways to spread its benefits and curb its most destructive aspects.

Book Defining Eastern Europe

Download or read book Defining Eastern Europe written by Piotr Twardzisz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a linguistic-semantic analysis of the expression ‘Eastern Europe’ in international English-language media discourse and academic discourse. Interdisciplinary in nature, it provides insights beyond semantics and lexicology, commenting on the politics, history, economy and culture of the region. Its thorough analysis of ‘Eastern Europe’ as a linguistic entity, surrounded and affected by other linguistic entities, allows for a systematic description of the term’s linguistic ‘behaviour’ in specialist written discourse. The author measures the ‘quantity’ and ‘quality’ of ‘Eastern Europe’ in specialist discourse, painting a holistic picture of how it appears in English-language quality texts published in the last twenty-five years. This book will appeal to students and scholars of cognitive linguistics, semantics, lexicology and lexicography, and to specialists working on history, political theory and international relations as they relate to Eastern Europe.

Download or read book The New Agenda for Peace Research written by Hon-Won Jeong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume analyses the conditions related not only to physical violence, but also to domination sustained by cultural norms, development practice and environmental policies. Peace research can be established as an integrative project by developing a conceptually coherent map which helps to reveal the locations and sources of violence, examine strategies to deal with them and illuminate structural transitions to a non-hierarchical world order. The themes in various chapters of this book can be submerged under the disciplinary goal of peace research which links the management and prevention of violent conflicts to non-violent structural transformations.

Book Democracy Disrupted

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ivan Krastev
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2014-06-20
  • ISBN : 0812223306
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book Democracy Disrupted written by Ivan Krastev and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the financial meltdown of 2008, political protests have spread around the world like chain lightning, from the "Occupy" movements of the United States, Great Britain, and Spain to more destabilizing forms of unrest in Tunisia, Egypt, Russia, Thailand, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Ukraine. In Democracy Disrupted: The Politics of Global Protest, commentator and political scientist Ivan Krastev proposes a provocative interpretation of these popular uprisings—one with ominous implications for the future of democratic politics. Challenging theories that trace the protests to the rise of a global middle class, Krastev proposes that the insurrections express a pervasive distrust of democratic institutions. Protesters on the streets of Moscow, Sofia, Istanbul, and São Paulo are openly suspicious of both the market and the state. They reject established political parties, question the motives of the mainstream media, refuse to recognize the legitimacy of any specific leadership, and reject all formal organizations. They have made clear what they don't want—the status quo—but they have no positive vision of an alternative future. Welcome to the worldwide libertarian revolution, in which democracy is endlessly disrupted to no end beyond the disruption itself.
