This manual offers a valuable learning resource, incorporating recent developments in the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), as well as in colposcopy and cervical pathology. Expertise in performing satisfactory, safe, and accurate colposcopic examinations requires high competence in the technical, interpretive, and cognitive aspects, and the capability to develop pragmatic and effective management plans and treatment. This comprehensive and concise manual covers all these aspects and serves as a useful handbook for acquiring the necessary skills for the visual recognition and interpretation of colposcopic findings and for developing the personal and professional attributes required for competence in colposcopy.

Book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control

Download or read book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community. Unnecessary, because there is compelling evidence, as this Guide makes clear, that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Unfortunately, the majority of women in developing countries still do not have access to cervical cancer prevention programmes. The consequence is that, often, cervical cancer is not detected until it is too late to be cured. An urgent effort is required if this situation is to be corrected. This Guide is intended to help those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden posed by cervical cancer for women, communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by health care providers, at different levels of care.

Book A Manual for Cervical Cancer Screening and Control

Download or read book A Manual for Cervical Cancer Screening and Control written by Branca Margherita Filho Adhemar Longatto and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cervical cancer (CC) is a major global health problem. Worldwide, an estimated 530,000 new cases of CC and 275,000 deaths from this disease are encountered every year. CC affects particularly women less than 45 years of age and it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the developing and underdeveloped countries, where 60–80% of cases are detected in advanced stages. After Human Papillomavirus (HPV) identification as the infectious etiological agent and elucidation of the natural history of CC, this tumor has become the most preventable and curable of all cancers. Well-organized screening programs with Papanicolaou (Pap) smear are known to be successful in decreasing both mortality and morbidity of this disease. This book describes the optional screening programs for CC prevention, whether organized, opportunistic or spontaneous and also their merits and weaknesses. Monitoring of the pathways and procedures of CC screening are mandatory in order to minimise the risks (wrong diagnosis, over-diagnosis, over-treatment) and maximize the benefits. In an optimal setting, the women should be the focus of the screening intervention and receive basic information on the crucial points of CC screening, so as to improve women's collaboration and compliance. The availability of alternative new screening tools to detect pre-cancer lesions provide new opportunities for CC prevention, as do HPV vaccines implemented in early life before viral exposure. This book, rich in pictures, tables and flowcharts is a comprehensive treatise on CC screening: its 14 chapters illustrate the fundamental principles and the necessary interventions for CC prevention and control and a guide for all medical and paramedical professionals involved in the interplay of CC screening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of precision medicine, physicians are increasingly in need of more definitive diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information derived from small biopsy specimens such as cytology samples in order to guide effective patient care. Cytopathology is well poised to meet this challenge. Whilst the traditional cytomorphologic component of cytology practice is still valid, enormous advances have been made in the field of cytopathology thanks to transformative technology and innovative individuals that have augmented the cytologists' ability to meet the demands of modern medicine. The purpose of this book is to describe, illustrate, and review many of the most recent developments regarding modern techniques employed in cytopathology. This latest monograph is intended for all cytologists including cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, cytology lab assistants, trainees, research scientists, and anyone who is interested in the field of cytopathology. We have invited pioneering experts in their respective fields to author these chapters. This book is not only the culmination of their groundbreaking work and effort but also presents a critical review of the current literature. We have attempted to provide readers with an informative and comprehensive aid so that they may better appreciate how emerging technology has been applied to cytology. Each chapter in this book presents a stand-alone contemporary review of emerging topics in cytopathology. We hope that you will find this monograph thought-provoking and a valuable reference for your practice.
