Book excerpt: The Second Coming of Jesus is the capstone of Scripture. But how does it relate to other teachings of the Bible? In what way are doctrines that launched the Protestant Reformation foundational to the certainty of the Advent. Ed Zinke connects the dots to reveal not only a coherent system of truth we can trust, but a reliable God we can love. He shoiws that doctrine is not an end in itself, but a means of understanding the One who is coming for us. Book excerpt: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." John 14:3 ESV Jesus Christ was very clear: One day He will return-and none of us knows when. Vocal fanatics claim to know the details of the Second Coming, causing many Christians to all but ignore the good news that Jesus is coming again. Yet God's own Word commands us to know the signs of the times, to remain watchful, and to be ready-whenever Christ comes. This book is a straightforward, in-depth exploration of the key biblical texts regarding the Second Coming; most notably, Christ's longest and most important eschatological message, the Olivet Discourse. As you study what the Word of God says about these matters, it will stir in your heart an earnest longing for Christ's return-as well as a certainty about how to live expectantly until He comes again.

Download or read book The Sin of Certainty written by Peter Enns and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial evangelical Bible scholar and author of The Bible Tells Me So explains how Christians mistake “certainty” and “correct belief” for faith when what God really desires is trust and intimacy. With compelling and often humorous stories from his own life, Bible scholar Peter Enns offers a fresh look at how Christian life truly works, answering questions that cannot be addressed by the idealized traditional doctrine of “once for all delivered to the saints.” Enns offers a model of vibrant faith that views skepticism not as a loss of belief, but as an opportunity to deepen religious conviction with courage and confidence. This is not just an intellectual conviction, he contends, but a more profound kind of knowing that only true faith can provide. Combining Enns’ reflections of his own spiritual journey with an examination of Scripture, The Sin of Certainty models an acceptance of mystery and paradox that all believers can follow and why God prefers this path because it is only this way by which we can become mature disciples who truly trust God. It gives Christians who have known only the demand for certainty permission to view faith on their own flawed, uncertain, yet heartfelt, terms.

It has eight chapters, each one written by a well-known minister of the era, except the last chapter written by an unknown with the initials J.W. Written for the layman, not the scholar, each chapter is in one way or another about the return of Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How often have you encountered some bizarre doctrine only to be stunned to hear a Bible verse quoted to support it? With new religious cults springing up almost daily and old ones growing rapidly, this is more and more common. How are they seemingly able to twist Scripture to mean something orthodox Christians have never believed it to mean in two thousand years? James Sire, author of The Universe Next Door and How to Read Slowly, has isolated twenty separate kinds of reading errors which are characteristically made by cultists as they interpret the Bible. He covers the full range from simple misquotation to complex argumentation which links one slightly eccentric interpretation to another, mixes in a few orthodox readings and ends with a conclusion totally foreign to the biblical world view. Sire also handles twisted translation, overspecification, virtue by association, ignoring the context and other flawed interpretations. A book to help us all become better readers of the Scriptures.

Book Come Lord Jesus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Motyer
  • Publisher : Inter-Varsity Press
  • Release : 2016-04-21
  • ISBN : 1783594640
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Come Lord Jesus written by Stephen Motyer and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The second coming of Jesus Christ is the core of the biblical worldview, the climax of the biblical message, the cornerstone of biblical theology, and the centrepiece of authentic biblical faith for the twenty-first century.’ At the heart of this bold opening statement by Stephen Motyer is the conviction that Jesus Christ is the ‘centre’ of the Scriptures, even though he only appears at the end. For the New Testament writers, Jesus Christ revolutionized their understanding of the Scriptures and gave them a new centre around which to interpret the work of God in the world – and the climax of that work is the ‘second coming’ of that same Jesus Christ. Jesus himself used the language of the Scriptures to promise his ‘coming again’, the ‘coming of the Son of Man’. Hence we need the whole of Scripture to understand what the second coming means for us today. The fact that the Bible ends with the prayer ‘Come, Lord Jesus!’ (Revelation 22:20) is deeply appropriate. The second coming is the ‘end’ of the biblical message, its ‘omega point’, its grand finale, the denouement when all the players in the drama of earth history, both human and angelic, are gathered in the drawing room to hear the Master unpack the plot and give the verdict. Motyer’s comprehensive, stimulating study is divided into two parts. Part One, ‘The biblical frame’, examines three Old Testament passages and lays the foundation for Part Two, ‘New Testament hopes and visions’, which explores a series of key texts. He focuses on the second coming, rather than on millennialism or the ‘end times’, in order to provide the fundamental biblical theology that must underlie our whole sense of God’s future for his world.

Book The End

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wanda Watkins
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03-01
  • ISBN : 9781457517815
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book The End written by Wanda Watkins and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The End: Experiencing the Second Coming of Christ, is a compelling, inspiring account of the second coming of Jesus Christ. The author, Wanda Watkins uses her imagination, supported by the Holy Bible, to heighten the reader's awareness regarding the divine promise of this celestial occasion. This book begins with the writer's resurrection from the dead, an imagined occurrence that brings the reader fully into the reality of her experience. For this reason, Wanda considers it a fictional account entrenched in and underscored by biblical references that support its credibility. Throughout her experience, Wanda informs the reader of her emotions upon beholding her awaited Savior and shares all of what she feels, what she says, what she hears, what she sees, and even what she thinks. As Wanda informs, she also ruminates about the challenges, obstacles, and trials that peculiarly served as such beautiful catalysts for this glorious occasion. Concurrently, she imparts spiritual insight and wisdom into the biblical truths that accompany the certainty of the appointed day that Christ will return. As she is raised higher and higher toward Heaven, Wanda, the created educator, continues to teach, persuade, encourage, and inspire. To further elaborate, The End is a captivating literary work that truly allows scriptural references about God's second coming to transfer the reader into the event's truths. Since the second coming of Christ is a reality that has been long awaited, many no longer think about it, some no longer believe it, and others are indifferent. Not only that, but much of what some do consider about Christ's second coming is clouded by false teachings regarding the subject. Many have accepted certain rumors, myths, and/or fables about what will happen or the date that it will take place. This informative book or account includes facts that endorse its credibility and compels the reader to either respond by faith or react according to self-will. Its thorough candor erases doubt and replaces it with the insight that transforms the occasional interest in Christ's return from a possibility to a certainty. The experience of reading it is a magnet that draws one into both the beauty of Christ returning for His Bride as well as the dismay of the unprepared. Regardless of the reader's response to The End, the book is unforgettable.

Book The Second Coming of Jesus Think Again

Download or read book The Second Coming of Jesus Think Again written by William H. Hogue and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching theme of this book is that the Second Coming of Jesus happened in AD 72, and that therefore Jesus is not coming again to rapture the church. The book lays out a thorough exploration in support of this theme. Daniels prophecies are foundational, especially his prophecy of the Seventy Weeks in Daniel 9:2427 and his prophecy of four sequential Fertile-Crescent, Mediterranean empires (see Daniel 7). The Fourth Empire, or the Roman Empire, is the key to understanding my theme, with stress on the meaning of the horns on the head of the Fourth Beast (see Daniel 7:78). As proof of my theme, I use the biblical code of two or three witnesses (see, e.g., Deuteronomy 19:15, Matthew 18:16, John 8:17, and 1 John 5:8). The three witnesses I give are Daniel, Jesus, and the collective apostlesall of whom taught and agreed that Jesuss Second Coming would take place before Jesuss generation passed away (Matthew 24:34). Furthermore, I show how the epistles of the New Testament reflect this theme by citing scores of passages from them for my readers to consider. Finally, in chapter 5 of the book and in five appendixes, I show how the Book of Revelation, aptly interpreted, fully agrees with this theme.
