Book The Diary of Andrew Fuller 1780 1801

Download or read book The Diary of Andrew Fuller 1780 1801 written by Michael D. McMullen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite his prominent role during the last quarter of the eighteenth century in promoting evangelical Calvinism among British Particular Baptists, only portions of the diary of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815), one of the most important surviving manuscripts from that century, have appeared in print in various volumes published between 1816 and 1882, portions usually inaccurately transcribed and highly editorialized. The current edition is the first complete and accurate transcription of Fuller’s diary based on the sole surviving volume now residing at Bristol Baptist College. This edition, with exhaustive identifications, notes, and valuable appendices for students of Baptist history, provides a fascinating glimpse into Fuller’s ministry at Soham and Kettering during a period (1780-1801) when he became the titular head of the Particular Baptists as a result of his preaching throughout Northamptonshire and surrounding counties; his writing, such as his influential work, The Gospel Worthy of All Acceptation (1785); and his multi-national work as founding secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society (1792), a position he diligently maintained until his death in 1815, having left a legacy unequalled by any other minister of his generation.

Book Calvinism Communion and the Baptists

Download or read book Calvinism Communion and the Baptists written by Peter Naylor and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with English Calvinistic Baptist churches from the later 1600s until the early 1800s, arguing that there was then no connection between restricted communion and hyper- or high Calvinism. A minimal definition of restricted communion would be the reception at the Baptist communion of those alone who had been immersed in water upon a profession of faith. A sketch of English Calvinistic Baptists in the years preceding and following the 1689 Act of Toleration stresses that they were a denomination other than that of the General Baptists, and that most Baptists, irrespective of party lines, were de facto Strict Baptists. Historical arguments for and against restricted communion will demonstrate that during that period there was no definitive link between the Particular Baptists' communion discipline and their interpretations of Calvinism. Attention is given to John Gill's and Andrew Fuller's interpretations of the relation between the atonement and evangelism.

Book Andrew Fuller

Download or read book Andrew Fuller written by Paul Brewster and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his day, practicing English pastor Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was also the most prominent Baptist theologian on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. He remained influential via his thoughtful writings up until the American Civil War. Since then, however, the emphasis on theological and doctrinal depth in Baptist preaching (and preaching generally) has been in decline. Now scholars are looking back at Fuller to provide an example of how pastors can relate doctrine to practice. He was not content to contribute to theological debate in print only; he also showed how the theological conclusions he had arrived at could be applied to local church ministry. This pastoral biography of Andrew Fuller, the second in B&H Publishing Group’s Studies in Baptist Life & Thought series, introduces a new preaching generation to his theological method, his soteriology, and how Fuller intentionally moved from doctrine to practice among the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, yet unusual, book on the faith and life of Baptist Christians. It explores a Baptist understanding of the church, ministry, sacraments, and mission from a thoroughly theological perspective. In a series of interlinked essays, the author relates Baptist identity to a theology of covenant, and to participation in the communion of the triune God. The book thus surveys the tracks of heritage, giving a solid historical background to each of the major themes, while at the same time offering traces of possible paths for the future, based on a tracing out of a vision of God.

Book Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation

Download or read book Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation written by David Mark Rathel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English minister Andrew Fuller lived a consequential life, debating noteworthy contemporaries such as Thomas Paine and contributing to the pioneering international work of William Carey. However, his soteriology remains his most significant theological contribution. Fuller explored the role that human agency plays in salvation's reception, and he offered substantive theological proposals that many religious historians now credit with advancing the Evangelical Revival. Fuller's work was both traditional and creative. He sought faithfulness to the broader Protestant tradition but developed that tradition in unique and contextually relevant ways. Despite Fuller's influence, much research into his life and work remains. Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation examines heretofore underutilized primary sources related to Fuller's theological development. It attends to neglected texts produced by Fuller's opponents and mentors. Analysing these sources provides a fresh reading of Fuller's historical setting, one that contextualizes his theology and illuminates his constructive work on faith as a human response to the Gospel. This new interpretation allows scholars to discern more accurately the concepts that animated Fuller, the persons he sought to refute, and the sources on which he relied. This interpretation of Fuller challenges assumptions in contemporary scholarship and raises new questions for further research.
