Book The Century Collegiate Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Century Collegiate Handbook Classic Reprint written by Garland Greever and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century Collegiate Handbook The plan of the original Century Collegiate Handbook was simple. That of the present text is even further simplified. Virtually every article is completely rewritten, and the number of articles is reduced from 139 to 55. This drastic numerical reduction not only is effected without loss of vital content, but is accompanied by the addition of units on library research, note-taking and summarizing, the writing of term papers, and theme revision. The chart shows, on two opposite pages, the headings of articles, so that student or instructor can see at a glance the resources of the volume or the number of a par ticular item. The book, like its predecessor, throws upon the student the responsi bility of teaching himself. Each article begins with a concise rule, which is illustrated with examples; then follows an exercise which the instructor may assign by adding an x to the numeral he writes in the margin of a theme. Necessarily, while performing the exercise the student will give attention to the rule. Thus he will conquer his individual weakness through study of a basic principle, and will at every hand connect theory with practice. Book Affirmative Action for the Rich

Download or read book Affirmative Action for the Rich written by Richard D. Kahlenberg and published by . This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of race-based affirmative action in higher education has given rise to hundreds of books and law review articles, numerous court decisions, and several state initiatives to ban the practice. However, surprisingly little has been said or written or done to challenge a larger, longstanding "affirmative action" program that tends to benefit wealthy whites: legacy preferences for the children of alumni. "Affirmative Action for the Rich" sketches the origins of legacy preferences, examines the philosophical issues they raise, outlines the extent of their use today, studies their impact on university fundraising, and reviews their implications for civil rights. In addition, the book outlines two new theories challenging the legality of legacy preferences, examines how a judge might review those claims, and assesses public policy options for curtailing alumni preferences. The book includes chapters by Michael Lind of the New America Foundation; Peter Schmidt of the "Chronicle of Higher Education"; former "Wall Street Journal" reporter Daniel Golden; Chad Coffman of Winnemac Consulting, attorney Tara O'Neil, and student Brian Starr; John Brittain of the University of the District of Columbia Law School and attorney Eric Bloom; Carlton Larson of the University of California--Davis School of Law; attorneys Steve Shadowen and Sozi Tulante; Sixth Circuit Court Judge Boyce F. Martin Jr. and attorney Donya Khalili; and education writer Peter Sacks.

Book Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century

Download or read book Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century written by Barbara Schneider and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook unifies access and opportunity, two key concepts of sociology of education, throughout its 25 chapters. It explores today’s populations rarely noticed, such as undocumented students, first generation college students, and LGBTQs; and emphasizing the intersectionality of gender, race, ethnicity and social class. Sociologists often center their work on the sources and consequences of inequality. This handbook, while reviewing many of these explanations, takes a different approach, concentrating instead on what needs to be accomplished to reduce inequality. A special section is devoted to new methodological work for studying social systems, including network analyses and school and teacher effects. Additionally, the book explores the changing landscape of higher education institutions, their respective populations, and how labor market opportunities are enhanced or impeded by differing postsecondary education pathways. Written by leading sociologists and rising stars in the field, each of the chapters is embedded in theory, but contemporary and futuristic in its implications. This Handbook serves as a blueprint for identifying new work for sociologists of education and other scholars and policymakers trying to understand many of the problems of inequality in education and what is needed to address them.
